Croydon is a major suburban town and commercial centre situated 9.5 miles (15.3 km) south of Charing Cross and the principal town in the London Borough of Croydon.
In 1965 the county borough was abolished and Croydon and Coulsdon and Purley Urban District formed the London Borough of Croydon.
Croydon Clocktower, built by the London Borough of Croydon in the mid-1990s, houses a state-of-the-art library, the David Lean cinema, a performance venue in the old reference library and the town museum.

The prospect of a tramlink in an urban district such as Croydon presents considerable difficulties for many people along the route, particularly where the route is new.
The attraction of using tramlink to travel from Wimbledon to Croydon and on to New Addington or Beckenham probably passes by most of the residents of Wimbledon and may continue to do so for some time, but I may be proved wrong.
I went to Croydon to look at the proposals for the scheme yesterday and also meant to see those who object, but due to the usual muddle, for which I take responsibility, I did not see them and I apologise to them.

The foundation stone of the Hospital of the Holy Trinity was laid by John Whitgift, Archbishop of Canterbury in 1596.
The archbishops had their summer residence at Croydon and the almshouses were built at the medieval town crossroads on the site of the Chequers Inn.
They were established to maintain 30 - 40 retired servants from Croydon and Lambeth and Whitgift had a set of rooms for his own use.

He says that the site is adjacent to his neighbouring constituency of Croydon North and therefore he says that he is pleased that Simon Allison is attending; we are going to hear from Simon in a moment.
He says the impact on Croydon Central is of course more limited and so it is more appropriate for Simon to attend but he is going to follow the issue closely and liase with Simon on it, having lived in South London for over 30 years and therefore knowing the area well.

Various people seem enthusiastic, but then somebody adds that they knew a person who fell off the climb into the Windy Way, and what is more, everybody needs to be back by 7.00 pm as it is the weekend of the Christmas dinner.
Chris does some more calculations and concludes that the way to the Far North must be up a climb near the back of the pinnacle.
It is the chimney type climb noticed near the camp which leads to Overpass Passage and the way to the Far North.

The Croydon North Cricket Club were saddened to hear the news of the passing of one of it's Life Members John Galtsmith on Sunday February 13 2005.
He and his wife Pam played an integral part in the life of the Croydon North Cricket Club through the sixties and seventies by their support and involvement in all of the club's activities.
Later on John and Pam moved to Darlington Park, north of Woolgoolga near Coffs Harbour in NSW where in retirement he played a lot of golf and fished off the beach.
