Friends of Croydon Road Recreation Ground - History   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Croydon Road Recreation Ground, together with that at Alexandra Road, now in Penge, was purchased by the Beckenham Local Board to provide public open spaces which had been lacking since the loss of the Fair Field for housing in the 1870s.
The shallow oval depression near the entrance, sometimes referred to as the Hippodrome, was flooded in winter and used as a skating rink.
Perhaps the proudest occasion the Recreation Ground was to witness was in 1935 when the Lord Mayor of London drove into the park in his ceremonial coach to present a Charter of Incorporation as a borough to Beckenham on behalf of H.M. The King.
