Croydon South (UK Parliament constituency) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Croydon South is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, covering the south west of the London Borough of Croydon.
Until 1974, most of the area was in the Surrey East constituency, with a constituency also called Croydon South covering the completely distinct area now occupied by Croydon Central constituency.
The current MP is Conservative Richard Ottaway, who in 1992 replaced William Clark, later Baron Clark of Kempston, who had held the seat from its creation in 1974.

Legislation was passed by the UK Parliament in September 2004, which will come into effect upon the dissolution of the current UK Parliament, to break the linkage between UK Parliament constituencies and Scottish Parliament constituencies; therefore this election will mark a reduction of the number of constituencies for the UK Parliament.
This is because Members of Parliament cannot formally take their seats until they swear allegiance to the Queen (which Sinn Féin members refuse to do).

Croydon South constituency proved to be the sting in Labour's election tail with Conservative candidate Richard Ottaway returned to the Houses of Parliament.
The results of Croydon North and Croydon Central were delivered earlier than this constituency whose count dragged on due to a new system of ballot counting.
Despite the fact that Croydon had returned Labour candidates in the other constituencies of the town, this was a much safer seat for the Conservatives.

Gentleman may be a little detached from such matters now--although a few months ago he was responsible for whipping up such matters--but I should tell him that all the GM schools have had to accept that the LEA has bent over backwards to ensure that they receive fair funding.
This year, in the budget that has just been approved by the local authority, there has been a substantial increase in the funding going to all secondary schools, but particularly to GM schools, to compensate for the fact that the Government's fair-funding formula--which he declined to mentioned--has now been properly funded.

BBC NEWS | Politics | Richard Ottaway
Richard Ottaway was first elected in the unlikely seat of Nottingham North, which he won in 1983 on the biggest swing in the country, helped by the UDM's disdain for the miners' strike.
However, he lost his seat at the next election, and after he returned in 1992 representing Croydon South, he was more moderate on these issues and repudiated his support for the death penalty.
Although not exactly pro-European, he is less inclined to attack all proposals from Europe on principle than many of his colleagues, and has an informed interest in international commercial and maritime law.
