Croydon Clocktower, built by the London Borough of Croydon in the mid-1990s, houses a state-of-the-art library, the David Lean cinema, a performance venue in the old reference library and the town museum.

Tramlink (until recently known as Croydon Tramlink) is a public transport system in south London, operated by FirstGroup on behalf of Transport for London.
Tramlink meets National Rail lines at a number of stations, but because it runs in an area relatively under-served by the London Underground (one of the reasons for its creation), its only interchange with the Underground is at Wimbledon.
Tramlink is operated with articulated low-floor Flexity Swift CR-4000 trams built by Bombardier Transportation in Vienna.

Croydon’s last day of service for the "old" trams was 7 April 1951 (routes 16 & 18 from Embankment to Purley and 42 from Thornton Heath to South Croydon) and the last day of service in London as a whole was 5 July 1952.
Tramlink is just allowed to squeeze into platform 10 of the station and the one tram-long available portion of the platform extends under the overbridge so is in a dark and gloomy location.
Operation around Croydon town centre appeared to be mostly smooth and the congestion at West Croydon stop/bus station seems to have eased adequately.

Some amendments were made and the Croydon Tramlink Act received Royal Assent on 21st July 1994 giving London Regional Transport (LRT) the legal power to build and run Tramlink.
Whilst Parliament were considering the bill, Croydon Council, LT and three private companies worked together to start the design process.

Tramtrack Croydon, the firm which runs the trams, is seeking a financial restructuring to stave off a cash crisis which has lumbered the company with £100m of debts.
Tramtrack Croydon was in 1996 awarded a 99-year contract to build and run Tramlink, which opened in May 2000 as "state-of-the-art public transport".

The important outer-London Borough of Croydon has developed significantly in recent years as a one of the major commercial and shopping centres of the south-east, and although served well by radial railway services has relied for fifty years solely on buses for internal transport.
Croydon itself was served by horse trams from 1879 to 1901, and then by electric cars.
A study undertaken by London Transport and British Rail, in association with the Borough of Croydon, concluded in 1990 that a modern tram system would be a realistic proposal for the area, to help stem the growth of motor traffic whilst preserving accessibility.

This led London Transport and Croydon Council to submit the Croydon Tramlink Bill to Parliament in November 1991 as a private member’s procedure and this was finally approved on 21 July 1994 after the third reading.
The trams used on Tramlink were built by Bombardier (who are part of the Tramtrack Croydon Ltd group) in Austria and are designated CR-4000, based on the K-4000 trams of Cologne, Germany.

I guess this is one of the reasons why Croydon Tramlink is sometimes referred to as "a new tram service in London" while when I was there I had the feeling of beeing in a completly different city...
If you arrive to West Croydon by train, what you'll see is the giant loop section of the Tramlink network, where all three routes share the tracks in one direction.
Intermodal interchange: I believe much of the success of the Croydon Tramlink comes from planning - there are interchange points for the railway at many stops (apart from Wimbledon: Mitcham Junction, West Croydon, East Croydon, Birkbeck, Beckenham Junction, Elmers End), so trams can be well-integrated part of the giant London transportation system.

The long awaited Croydon Tramlink finally opened in May 2000, to widespread excitement and anticipation.
May 10 was when the route from Croydon to New Addington opened and the Beckenham and Wimbledon routes followed on May 23 and 30.
Tramlink planned to celebrate the birthday by decorating tram stops with balloons to mark the dates and drivers will be passing on a Thank you for travelling with us' message to passengers at regular intervals.

This Order may be cited as the Croydon Tramlink (Penalty Fares) Order 2003 and shall come into force on 15th July 2003.

Croydon Tramlink has reported that it does not have enough money to operate beyond March.
The auditors of the Croydon transport scheme indicated in their last set of accounts that the system could not meet its operating costs beyond March 2003.

The route continues to drop and is on the edge of Heathfield farm at this point.
New Addington may not be the nicest part of London but it is the main reason for constructing Tramlink as it was one of the largest estates in London not served by rail.

At this section Tramlink looks more of a "Stadtbahn" ("city rail", a typical sort of LRT operation in german cities) than anywhere else!

 The Rail Vehicle Accessibility (Croydon Tramlink Class CR4000 Vehicles) Exemption Order 2001
The exemption given in respect of regulation 9(d)(i) shall apply in relation to any particular control on a horizontal handrail in an exempted vehicle only if there is a control, the centre of which is within the height limits contained in regulation 9(d)(i), on the nearest vertical handrail to the priority seat in question.
The exemption given in respect of regulation 13(5)(a) shall apply in relation to any exempted vehicle only when it is used on any railway authorised by the Croydon Tramlink Act 1994[3].
It sets a time limit of one year on one exemption from those provisions and imposes conditions, the most significant of which is to require notification to the Secretary of State of a relevant injury in any part of a rail vehicle to which this Order applies.
