Crucian carp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Crucian Carp (Carassius carassius) is a member of the family Cyprinidae, which includes many other fish such as the common carp, or the smaller minnows.
There have been various bids for a breakage of this record since, but they have been passed off as the specimens have not been said to have been "true" crucians, but hybrids between the carp and one of its relatives, such as the goldfish, which are not native to the British Isles.
These carp are also occasionally kept as freshwater aquarium fish, as well as in water gardens, although they are not commonly available commercially, mainly because they are not in particularly high demand due to the presence of more colourful fish such as the koi or orfe.

CARP - LoveToKnow Article on CARP   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The carp appears to be a native of temperate Asia and perhaps also of south-eastern Europe, and to have been introduced into other parts in the 12th and,3th century; it was first mentioned in England in 1496.
In the British Isles the carp seldom reaches a length of 2~ ft., and a weight of 2olb, whilst examples of that size are quite frequent on the continent, and others measuring 41/2 ft. and weighing 60 lb or more are on record.
A close ally of the carp is the Crucian carp, Cyprinus carassius, chiefly distinguished by the absence of barbels.

With a View to Fisheries - Feeding habits of fish
The crucian carp have managed to adapt due to their generalistic feeding nature thus allowing a switch to alternative prey; this is helped by the healthy species diversity within the reservoir.
Crucian carp do eat macrophyte when the overall species diversity is low in a lake, this is not the case in Drakes reservoir.
The crucian carp in Drakes reservoir are omnivorous, they are pelagic feeders throughout their life, but turn to benthic species as the fish increases in length.

Crucian Carp is distinguished from Goldfish by its slightly convex dorsal-fin margin and slightly emarginate caudal fin; juvenile and young adult Crucian Carp have a fl spot at the base of the caudal fin.
Meristics of Crucian Carp X Common Carp hybrids are given in appendix B.
For example, in parts of the former Soviet Union, the Crucian Carp inhabits brackish lakes of the steppe with salinities to 16 ppt, and spawns in the saline Volga River Delta (Zhadin and Gerd, 1963).

 Crucian Carp
The Crucian Carp whilst of the same family as the Common Carp is different in that it doesn't have barbules and rarely reaches a weight above 1.5 kg.
The Crucian Carp can be distinguished from it's relative, the Goldfish, by it's colour being dark brownish across the back, golden or greyish green sides and a yellowish or white belly.
Crucian Carp when kept in the same pond as it's larger relatives can and often interbreed with the Common, Mirror or Leather Carp which in turn can present the angler with some confusion to the fishes identity, not to mention the fish itself!

 INTEGRATED FISH FARMING IN CHINA
Silver carp, bighead, grass carp, fl carp, and common carp, with their larger size and speedy growth, are the dominant cultured species for polyculture in integrated fish farms.
Crucian carp, wuchang fish, and mud carp, however, owing to their smaller size and slower growth, are usually regarded as secondary species for polyculture.
Common carp and crucian carp spawn from the end of March to early April in central and central eastern part of China, from April to May in northern China, and in June in northeastern China; however, spawning begins as early as late December in the Pearl River basin.

As you can see in the pictures above, the crucian carp varies in it's wild forms, and it is likely that the silver and blue/pewter forms are axanthic/anerythristic (white) under their melanin, while the "green bronze" forms are xanthic (yellow) under their melanin, and the darker "copper/bronze" is xanthic/erythristic (orange) under the melanin.

A crucian carp can maintain normal heart function and stay active in water with no oxygen, a feat not seen before in a vertebrate.
The new study of the crucian carp, however, shows that its heart rate dips when oxygen drops but rises again to essentially normal rates, Stecyk and his colleagues report in the Oct. 1 Science.
By monitoring blood flow in 16 carp, Stecyk and his colleagues found that the normal heart rate of about 17 beats per minute dropped for the first 5 hours in the oxygenfree water but then gradually rose to 15.

Professor Göran Nilsson, of the Division of General Physiology at the University of Oslo in Norway, told delegates at the Annual Meeting for the Society for Experimental Biology that the Crucian carp, Carassius carassius, has evolved to cope with anoxia.
Nilsson says that the Crucian carp is able to change the structure of its gills to prevent them becoming anoxic, thereby avoiding suffocation.
In order to cope with low oxygen levels, the carp produces tranquiliser like chemicals and alcohol, which allow the fish to go for days or even months without oxygen, depending on the water temperature, while still remaining active.

The Crucian carp, Carassius carassius, is a close relative of the goldfish, Carassius auratus, and it's possible for the two species to hybridise and produce viable offspring.
Fish geneticists from Hull University examined the DNA of a number of Crucian carp populations to determine the level of contamination through hybridisation.
Environment Agency Fisheries Officer Phil Bolton said: "Our research shows cause for major ecological concern because not only are the offspring capable of out-competing crucian carp but they are also capable of reproducing and further interbreeding with pure stocks.
