Cruiser tank - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Once gaps had been punched in the enemy front by the infantry tanks, the cruisers were intended to penetrate to the rear, attacking lines of supply and communication in accordance with the theories of Hobart and Liddell-Hart.
However, as fighting enemy tanks was part of the projected role of the Cruiser tanks they were the first to be upgraded to the heavier 6 pounder (57mm) gun when it became available, and a great deal of effort was put into developing (admittedly unsuccessful) Cruiser tanks armed with the 17 pounder QF gun.
During early WW2, the Cruiser Mark VI Crusader was probably the best-known cruiser, being used in large numbers in the desert.

As no new tank engines had been developed, most of these tanks were powered by the Nuffield Liberty, an American engine designed in WWI to give an output of 200bhp.
Domes were not present on the tanks built from the start as Cromwells, these tanks had an external track tension system which was adjusted by a large "hockey stick" steel bar, stowed on the side of the engine deck.
Armour was a maximum of 76mm on early marks, but in 1944 some tanks received 25mm plates welded to the frontal armour, increasing the thickness to 101mm maximum.

Nase noviny - Cruiser Tank Mk VI Crusader
After it ceased to serve as a battle tank, numbers of Crusader tanks were rebuilt for auxiliary and special roles, such as mine-clearing, artillery observers, anti-aircraft tanks with 40mm Bofors guns, armoured recovery vehicles, anti-tank gun tractors, and armoured bulldozers, which it performed successfully until the end of the Second World War.
Early in 1939, after the purchase of an American Christie tank by the Nuffield company and a detailed inquiry into the good and bad points of the unique Christie "fast tank" suspension, a fast cruiser tank was designed, based on the previous A13 tank, known as Covenanter.
It was named A15 and mounted a turret with a 7.92mm Besa machine gun on the left side of the hull, next to the driver, which distinguished it from the A13.

Tank classification - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The British referred to these as infantry tanks and cruiser tanks respectively, although the latter was expected to exploit holes in the enemy lines and "cruise" at high speeds behind the lines.
Cruiser tanks were designed to complement infantry tanks, exploiting gains made by the latter to break through enemy lines and assault from the rear.
In short, super-heavy tanks were merely an extension of World War I ideals regarding heavy assault guns placed on self-propelled carriages, emulating the railway guns and heavy artillery of their time, and with the rise of missiles and rockets, extremely long-range guns became obsolete.

Upon returning to Britain and making it's report, a Christie tank was purchased by the Nuffield Organization and work began on development of a fast cruiser tank using the Christie suspension system.
Extensive redesign was needed, since Christie's tanks were merely demonstration vehicles and never carried heavy armour or armament, but by December 1938 the first production models of the A15 Covenanter tank were leaving the factory.
Although it ceased to be a battle tank after that, numbers were rebuilt to become specialist vehicles; mine clearing, artillery observers, anti-aircraft tanks (fitted with 40 mm Bofors guns): armoured recovery tanks; anti-tank gun tractors; and armoured bulldozers.

Cruiser tanks; a style not a model
While German strategists were deciding that war was going to go to the mobile and tanks would provide the required mobility, the British figured that future war was going to resemble World War I with entrenched lines.
Thus they channelled their tank development in two directions: "infantry" tanks, having a top speed at about a infantryman's running speed, were to support infantry across no-man's land while "cruiser" tanks, like their naval brethren, were to engage and destroy other tanks (cruiser and infantry).
British "cruiser" tanks tended to be far faster than their "infantry" counterparts and were usually heavy armoured whenever possible, befitting the British design philosophy.
