Crustacean - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Crustaceans are of three distinct parts: head, thorax, and abdomen (or pleon), although the head and thorax may fuse to form a cephalothorax.
Crustacean appendages are typically biramous, meaning they are divided into two parts; this includes the second pair of antennae, but not the first, which is uniramous.
Crustaceans tend, therefore, to be rarer in the fossil record than trilobites.

crustacean. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
All crustaceans have bilaterally symmetrical bodies covered with a chitinous exoskeleton, which may be thick and calcareous (as in the crayfish) or delicate and transparent (as in water fleas).
In the majority of larger crustaceans the head and thorax are fused into a cephalothorax, which is protected by a large shieldlike area of the exoskeleton called the carapace.
Crustaceans constitute the subphylum Crustacea of the phylum Arthropoda.

 NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Crustacean
Although crustaceans are rarer as fossils than trilobites are, a number of different types of crustaceans are common in the rocks of the Cretaceous period, as well as those of the Caenozoic era.
Most of the smaller crustaceans, such as shrimp, have an exoskeleton which is somewhat delicate and for this reason their fossil record is comparatively poor.
However, crustaceans such as crabs and lobsters have a thicker exoskeleton which is reinforced with calcium carbonate and so their fossil record is much fuller.

The crustaceans (Crustacea) are a large group of arthropods (55,000 species), usually treated as a subphylum.
Most crustaceans have separate sexes and are distinguished by apendages on the abdomen called swimmerets.
Some authorities have treated the entire group of crustaceans as a class, in which case the classes escribed in the taxonomic table are treated as subclasses.

IOL: Fossil of oldest crustacean has great detail
The crustacean, less than half a millimetre long, dwelt in the ocean 511 million years ago and was an ancient relative of the crustaceans that live today, including crabs, lobsters, shrimps and crayfish, said Mark Williams, British Geological Survey paleontologist.
Williams said the appendages the crustacean used to bring food to its mouth are preserved, as well as an antenna and parts of the body.
Fortey agreed that if crustaceans were present in the early Cambrian, it becomes "perfectly plausible" that the fuse for this primordial explosion in animal types actually had been lit in the Precambrian period before 545 million years ago.

The animals pictured here are one of the two large groups of animals that I have been keeping track of (the other group is the rotifers, a phylum just as prevalent as the crustaceans here shown but they are very hard to photograph).
These small crustaceans are found in great numbers in the waters of Avon Point from May to July and to a lesser extant from Sept. to Nov. In the spring period the number of Bosmina can vary from zero to over 1200 per 12.5 liters.
What is really unusual about the animals found in the samples is that in one sample taken on Sunday there may only be several animals in it, on Wednesday there may be 500 to 800 animals (I take samples twice a week, usually on Wednesday and Sunday).
