Formerly it was the title given to individual members of these orders, as Friar Laurence (in Romeo and Juliet), but this is not now common.
The difference between friars and monks is explained in article Monasticism.
Though the usage is not accurate, friars, and also canons regular, are often spoken of as monks and included among the monastic orders.

Friars.-The friars had several houses in London, and the five orders were all represented there, viz.
the Dominicans or Blackfriars ; the Franciscans or Greyfriars ; the Friars of the Holy Cross, Crossed or Crutched Friars ; the Augustinian, or Austin Friars, and the Carmelite or Whitefriars.
Frequent bequests were made to the friars by the citizens of London in their wills, sometimes to a particular order, sometimes to the five orders, sometimes to the four orders of Friars in London.

 Crutched Friars
Each friar carried in his hand a wooden staff surmounted by a cross and also had a cross of red cloth upon his habit, from which circumstances originated the name by which they became commonly known.
The priory of S. Maria di Morella at Bologna was made chief house of the order by Pope Clement IV, and it was from this that the English Crutched Friars came.
A similar order of friars, known by the same name and like them claiming to come from the East, also existed in France and the Low Countries, having been introduced or organized in 1211 by Théodore de Celles.

In 1343 Thomas Legh, of Oxford, townclerk, sought permission to grant to the Friars of the Holy Cross in London a messuage without the South Gate of Oxford, in Grandpont.
12) that the friars should pay 1 mark yearly for tithes to the parish church, which belonged to the college; that one of the brethren should pray daily in the oratory for the founder, warden, and fellows of the college; that they should pay a rent of 20s.
In the will of Nicholas de Weston, 1271, money is left to five houses of friars in Oxford, and to eight other religious houses and nine anchorets; as the Crutched Friars are not mentioned, it may be assumed that they had no house in Oxford in 1271; Bodl.

Camille Oostwegel relates that, after the fire at the St Servatius Basilica in the 1950s, he was walking with his ‘bonpa’ (grandfather) and passed the Crutched Friars Church (Kruisherenkerk) in the heart of Maastricht.
When he asked about this church and whether such a disaster could befall it, his grandfather explained that, although it had been a church for the friars who wore red and white crosses, it was now a government station, where some scientific experiments were carried out.
Today the Church of the Crutched Friars has been restored to more than its former glory as a hostelry for travelers and a place of study - where the friars would copy out documents.

There was also a house of Crutched Friars near the Tower of London.
The membership of these houses in the later middle ages can be at least partially reconstructed using the episcopal ordination lists which survive for the diocese of London from 1361.
In particular the houses of Carmelites and Austin Friars were being supported but also the smaller house of Crutched Friars which seems to have substantially increased its recruitment as reflected in ordination lists between the 1360s and 1390s.
