A crux gemmata perfectly proclaims the contradiction which lies at the heart of our Christian faith: only those who die with Jesus will come to life with Jesus.
The Apostle begins the passage with, "Have among yourselves the same attitude that is also yours in Christ Jesus." Paul doesn't quote this early Christian hymn so that his readers will "ooh and aah" about Jesus, but so that they'll reflect on their own obligation to die and rise.
Since we rarely see crux gemmatas today, we must admit we've lost some of the early Christian community's charism.

(See BAPTISMAL FONT.) These rooms were sometimes spacious; that in the Roman catacomb of Priscilla adjoins other larger cubicula used perhaps for the adjuncts of the baptismal rite; that of the Pontian cemetery bears traces of sixth-century mural decoration, a beautiful crux gemmata with other Christian symbols being yet visible.
With the construction of edifices for Christian worship a special building was erected for the ceremonies of initiation.

That's why, for the first six centuries of Christianity, followers of Jesus used "crux gemmatas" instead of the crucifixes with which most of us are familiar.
The early Christian "crux gemmata" shows that contradiction.
If we were to ask Deutero-Isaiah whether God's near to us or far away, he'd answer, "Yes!" Faith is a matter of living in the midst of such contradictions.

CNP Articles - When I Survey the Wondrous Cross (Part 1)
Hellriegel emphasized that the early Christians did have what he called the Crux gemmata, the "Jeweled Cross," without the figure of the crucified Jesus.
This drew their attention to the Easter Christ, the victorious Lord of the Resurrection, whose victory over sin, suffering and death served as the ideal model for them to follow.
In the Middle Ages, the artistic representations of the cross traveled far from the Easter triumph of the Crux gemmata to the realistic portrayals of the agonized Jesus of the Passion.
