Hughan stated that Cryptic Masonry was worked in England from about 1760 but died out, though it continued in Scotland under one branch of the Grand Encampment of Knights Templar.
Cryptic Masonry reentered Scotland by charter from the Grand Council of Illinois in 1878 and the Grand Council of Scotland was formed in 1880.
It was resolved that the Cryptic Degrees should be under the exclusive jurisdiction of Grand Councils and that no members should be recognized, except those who received the degrees in a Council of Royal and Select Masters or by authority of a Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite.

The Grand Council of Cryptic Rite Masons of Western Canada, Royal and Select Masters is comprised of 18 Cryptic Rite Councils, scattered from Winnipeg to Vancouver Island.
Conferral was assigned to chapters of Royal Arch Masonry for many years until 1870 when the Scottish Rite, and the General Grand Royal Arch Chapter, both divested themselves of the degrees.
The Select Master degree is said by some to be the most interesting degree in Masonry, perhaps because it rationally accounts for the concealment and preservation of those essential secrets which were buried in darkness for a period of four hundred and seventy years, and brought to light at the building of the second Temple.

Cryptic Masonry now consists of the two degrees that concern the crypt or vault under King Solomon's Temple, the Royal Master degree and the Select Master degree.
Although the history of the Cryptic degrees is connected with the Scottish Rite degrees, Cryptic Masonry is now a part of the York, or American Rite.
Also, the Cryptic degrees seemed to be forgotten in some states where they had been included in the Royal Arch, or Capitular system.

It was not listed as a side degree of European Masonry in a catalog of over 700 known degrees which was published in the 19th century.
At the triennial Assembly of the General Grand Council 1n 1924, the degree was formally adopted as a permanent part of the Cryptic Rite and was to be conferred upon, or communicated to, all candidates.
This is not a cryptic degree, however, it is placed in the York Rite system as it prepares the candidate historically for the Order of the Red Cross which immediately follows in the Commandery Orders.

 The Grand Council Of Royal Select Masons
The early development of the Council of Royal and Select Masters or the Cryptic Rite in Prince Hall Freemasonry may be traced [Hinman, History of the Cryptic Rite, 1861) to Henry A. Francken, founder of the Lodge of Perfection at Albany, New York, 1767 in New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
It was not until August 14,1916 that the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons for Ohio, at its session in Dayton, sanctioned the establishment of Councils of Royal and Select Masters.

Monroe Council No. 1 was apparently aggressive and progressive in disseminating the Cryptic Rite, and numerous Royal Arch Masons from the more populated areas of the State received the Royal and Select degrees from this Council during the decade from 1847 and 1857.
The General Grand Council was organized for the sole purpose of watching over, and protecting the interests of Cryptic Masons in the States, Districts, and Territories which recognize its jurisdiction; also to give advice and instruction as might seem most conducive to the peace, advancement, and perpetration of Cryptic Masonry.
A detailed history of the General Grand Council may be found in a two volume history of Cryptic Masonry written by a committee of the General Grand Council in 1931, and reprinted in 1977.
