Cryptic Writings - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cryptic Writings is an album by heavy metal band Megadeth, released in 1997.
An EP with instrumental versions of some of the songs were released the same year.
Continuing the trend from Youthanasia, Cryptic Writings features fewer songs critical of government and politics in favor of more personal songs.

 MEGADETH
Now, 15 years later, with the release of their eighth CD Cryptic Writings (Capitol Records), Megadeth continues to enjoy the success and longevity that very few rock bands have been able to possess.
But so much has happened between Youthanasia and Cryptic Writings in the music world...everything is different; the fashion, the haircut, the sound of the music.
We also wanted Cryptic Writings to move forward, into new uncharted territory for us, and that was specifically where Bud gave us a lot of direction.

Our fans consider us the Mercedes of metal." If that is true, then Cryptic Writings (Capitol), Megadeth's latest, clearly shows them to have all their pistons pumping.
A true headbanger's delight, the album gives no indication that Mustaine, guitarist Marty Friedman, bassist David Ellefson and drummer Nick Menza are ready to abandon their patented speed-riffing attack in favor of a more alternative, grunge, punk, pop or, heaven forbid, electronica approach.
GW: The quality of the songwriting on Cryptic Writings is similar to that of the material on Countdown to Extinction, as opposed to Youthanasia, which many thought was a little below Megadeth's standards.

Cryptic Writings is actually the album of maturity.
Even though Megadeth does not search for the killer riff anymore, Cryptic Writings has powerful and speed songs like 'The Disintegrators', 'Vortex' or 'FFF', that could have been on the previous albums.
The very god 'Use The Man' does not sound like any other song, with an intro that seems to come from a radio of the 60's and an unconventional and catchy structure, even if it is a bit disturbing.

After all, there is some great music here on Cryptic Warnings; it just wasn't of interest to Megadeth fans, most of whom had given up on the band by this point.
Given this underlying sentiment of despair, Cryptic Warnings is somewhat of a depressing album to listen to presently.

The lyrics and vocals are quite inferior to the brilliant Youthanasia album, and while the band proves that they can still wail with the best of them, this album simply does not offer the diversity of some of the previous albums.

And even though Dave Mustaine and Megadeth would eventually follow suit and release "Risk" in 1999, they first made an album (1997's "Cryptic Writings") which pleased all metal fans, and helped make the Metallica fans less angry.
"Cryptic Writings," which is kind of like a combinations of Megadeth's last two albums (1992's "Countdown to Extinction" and 1994's "Youthanasia"), is full of crunchy riffs, memorable hooks, and famous, acrobatic guitar solos from axemen Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman.
