Cryptid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cryptids are hypothetical species of animals known from anecdotal evidence and/or other evidence insufficient to prove them with certainty.
The study of cryptids is known as Cryptozoology, and more information can be found in that article.
These are living creatures that, although not necessarily considered cryptids, were thought to be extinct and are often discussed in cryptozoological forums.

New Zuiyo Maru Cryptid Observations - Strong Indications It Was a Marine Tetrapod
Although this cryptid may not currently be identified with either living creatures or specific known fossils, it possessed characteristics like those of marine reptiles, perhaps similar to the Sauropterygia.
Therefore, it was concluded that the Zuiyo Maru cryptid was a basking shark.
At present, it is possible that the cryptid may be unknown from the fossil record, in part because the measurements do not match any known fossil, and in part because of the variant shape of the flippers, corroborated by the matching appearance on the Egyptian seal.

This cryptid may be an example of an unknown cat species, and thus may belong to the Type #3 group.
Otters are not known to live in the area of the sightings, which means that this animal is either misplaced, or perhaps an unknown relative of the otters.

The base definition of the term “cryptid” applies to mystery animals (supposedly including animals out of place or time; the author disagrees with this, as will be discussed below) for which there is a body of evidence, including sightings, and perhaps photographs and physical evidence such as tracks.
It is somewhat borderline as to whether to call an example of the former a cryptid, for while they are not new species, they are species or subspecies which are not thought to exist in the present day.
In this case, the mystery animal in question is the cryptid, while the prehistoric survivor is merely a hypothesis.

Recently “cryptid” was recognized by the lexicographers at Merriam-Webster as a word of legitimate coinage, though it has yet to appear in their dictionary [as of 1999].
Cryptids are either unknown species of animals or animals which, though thought to be extinct, may have survived into modern times and await rediscovery by scientists.
“Cryptid” is derived from “crypt,” from the Greek kryptos (hidden); “id,” from the Latin ides, a patronymic suffix; and the Greek “ides,” which means “in sense.” When the suffix id is used it typically applies to an implied lineage or similar usages, as in “perseid” (meteors appearing to originate from Perseus, typically around August 11).

Cryptid odds of existence - Above Top Secret Conspiracy Community
Theoretically, a cryptid living in a closed environment should be easier to discover than one living in an open environment, such as the open ocean.
It is no coincidence that those cryptids who remain undiscovered are said to exist in large, unspecified environments (Mokele Mbembe, for example, who is supposed to exist somewhere within the depths of the Congo).
For this reason, cryptids such as Bigfoot, which have thousands upon thousands of eyewitness reports, in which they are relatively uniformly described, with similar attributes, are more likely to actually exist than cryptids such as the Mongolian Death Worm, which has a significantly lower number of eyewitness accounts.

Cryptozoology - Unknown Creatures and Hidden Animals
For a creature to be classed as a cryptid there must be at least some evidence for its existence.
The stronger the evidence, the more likely the cryptid is to exist and the more interesting it is to a cryptozoology researcher.
A cryptid does not have to be a "monster".

 The Cryptozoologist: Cryptozoology
Cryptids are in the most limited definition, either unknown species of animals or those that are thought to be extinct but which may have survived into modern times and await rediscovery by scientists.
While Heuvelmans created cryptozoology as a goal-oriented discipline (endeavoring to prove the existence of hidden animals), the fact that some of these cryptids will turn out not to be new species does not invalidate the process by which that conclusion is reached and does not retroactively discard the prior status as a cryptid.
For example, the large unknown "Monster" in a local lake is a cryptid until it is caught and shown to be a known species such as an alligator.

The cryptozoology news for 2002 was an intriguing mix of new animal discoveries, cryptid sightings, sad passings, and, yes, hoax stories.
A cryptid feline animal was reported on Christmas Eve, 2002, around 8 PM, when three people in Beith reported a large fl cat.
Of course, those interested in cryptid cat reports called “American lions” have pointed out that if ever one of these large cats was killed, it could look very much like an African lion.

The Cryptid Zoo: A Menagerie of Cryptozoology
Creatures that are under investigation by cryptozoologists are called cryptids.
Although cryptozoology doesn't get much respect from other scientific disiplines, it has had some spectacular success stories, including the pongo (now known as the gorilla), the okapi (an animal that looks like a cross between a giraffe and zebra), and the coelacanth (a prehistoric fish thought to be extinct).
Since most cryptids have remained in the realm of the mythical, the main job of cryptozoologists is not to prove that a certain cryptid exists, but rather to collect and analyze as many sightings as possible in order to determine if the available evidence is strong enough to keep the question open.

Some cryptids are so odd that cryptozoologists have been entirely stumped as to what sort of creatures they might be.
Sometimes, researchers theorize that the most bizarre cryptids, such as chupacabras and air rods, are escaped alien pets or genetic experiments.
Along these lines of thought, the most radical ideas on this subject claim that cryptids such as Bigfoot are cleverly-disguised robots of some sort, possibly with biological components, that aliens send to do their bidding.
