Topic: Cryptocercidae

In the News (Fri 1 Jun 12)

  abstract
In addition, the relationship of Cryptocercidae to other cockroach families and the relationship between the cockroach, Cryptocercus punctulatus, and the termite, Mastotermes darwiniensis, have generated debate.
In this paper, a phylogeny for cockroaches, mantids and termites based on DNA sequence of the mitochondrial ribosomal RNA genes is presented.
Cryptocercus is the sole representative of the family Cryptocercidae and at present three species are recognized within the genus worldwide: Cryptocercus punctulatus in the United States, Cryptocercus relictus in Eurasia and Cryptocercus primarius in the Orient.

 Isoptera
The termites are another group of insects that appear to be closely related to cockroaches.
This conclusion is based on behavioral and ecological similarities between termites and wood roaches (members of the family Cryptocercidae).
These cockroaches live in fallen timber on the forest floor, feeding on wood fibers which are then digested by symbiotic microorganisms within their digestive systems.

Three new species of the wood roach, Cryptocercus (Blattodea: Cryptocercidae), are described from the Appalachian mountains in the eastern United States.
The description is based on consistent differences in DNA sequence of the two mitochondrial rRNA genes, chromosome number, geographic range, and morphology.
The cockroach genus, Cryptocercus (Blattodea: Cryptocercidae) at present consists of four recognized species worldwide: Cryptocercus relictus in eastern Russia, Cryptocercus primarius in eastern China, Cryptocercus clevelandi in the western United States and Cryptocercus punctulatus in the eastern United States.
