Cryptograms - Play Online or Print Your Own for Free!
A cryptogram is a block of text which has been rendered unreadable through the use of what is called a "substitution cypher".
Cryptograms have been used as a means of protecting sensitive information for thousands of years, though today computers and more advanced cryptographical methods have made simple substitution cyphers much less practical.
There are a lot of other websites out there which offer cryptograms, but I wanted to offer a new type of online cryptogram software which could be played exactly as you would play it on paper.

  David Mamet Society: The Cryptogram
The Cryptogram is one of Mamet's lesser efforts, interesting mostly for that part of the play that describes a boy's experience with betrayal.
The Cryptogram concerns three people who are caught up in each other's lives, and who are unable to make much sense of their relationships.
Setting ambiguity aside, The Cryptogram does not lack the thematic and linguistic characteristics of Mamet's other writing, but it is a distinctly low-voltage effort save for the moments in scene three when the subject of betrayal was confronted.

 Cryptogram Helper
In a cryptogram, one letter stands for another and to solve it you have to find what each of those letters are.
Notice that each L is replaced by a Q and each O is replaced by an S, etc. The traditional method of solving a cryptogram involves using a paper and pencil (and an eraser) to keep track of your substitutions.
When the "Edit Cryptogram" checkbox is not checked, then you can type a character over another one to replace all instances of that character with the new one you typed.

 WashingtonPost.com: `Cryptogram': Child's Play
In David Mamet's "The Cryptogram," which opened Sunday at the Studio Theatre, the hero is a precocious, sensitive, highly intelligent boy of 11 or so named John (Michael Leon Drezner).
In "The Cryptogram," the pinched dramatic style and the pinched emotional content combine to produce a very small theatrical experience.
A cryptogram is a code, a cipher, a puzzle, but the hidden message here turns out to be that familiar wail, "It's all my parents' fault!" Like "Long Day's Journey Into Night," "Death of a Salesman" and "The Glass Menagerie," "The Cryptogram" is written from a son's point of view.

 David Mamet Society: The Cryptogram
Directed by Scott Zigler, The Cryptogram ran for three weeks during spring 1996 on the Neuhaus Arena Stage, a small theatre in the round generally used by the Alley for plays with few characters and a simple set design.
This play is compelling in large part because, while it maintains a certain degree of abstraction, thereby inviting all sorts of schematic interpretations, it also possesses enough specificity to focus our interest on the individual characters and the traumas they endure.
What gives The Cryptogram, as well as much of Mamet's other work, its pathos is that the characters seem to realize that things are always more complicated than such language would have us believe.
