i would question whether Cryptomeria japonica is hardy in zone 5....
An interesting observation at The US National Arboretum (zone 7 a/b b/a) whichever it was -...the Cryptomeria's there looked like garbage, please excuse my description but that's what every single one of them looked like minus the ones growing in seclusion amongst the dense plants of the Asian Collection.
I've found that though Cryptomeria's can tolerate heavier clay soil in the south, they really need a better draining soil up here- to keep diseases at a minimum and so that they don't put out so much late growth which will be winter killed...
