The Crystal Palace Transmitter is a telecommunications tower in the Crystal Palace area in the London Borough of Bromley (Grid reference TQ339712).
It is best-known as the main television transmitter for the London area.
Constructed in 1950, at 222 m (728 ft) tall it was the tallest structure in London until the construction of the One Canada Square tower at Canary Wharf in 1991.

Crystal Palace Park is situated in the northwestern corner of Bromley, abutting the boroughs of Croydon, Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham.
The Crystal Palace, a massive and imposing edifice of glass and iron by Joseph Paxton, was originally erected in Hyde Park for the Great Exhibition of 1851.
Following the closure of the exhibition the Crystal Palace was dismantled and re-erected on this green space in south-east London.

In December 1934, a 10kW VHF transmitter – the most powerful transmitter of its type in the world – was installed next to Studio 3 in the Crystal Palace building, close to the South Tower.
Studio and transmitting equipment, essentially as developed for the Crystal Palace facility, were delivered to the new BBC station in March 1936, and transmissions from North London began in August of that year.

The Crystal Palace was a huge iron and glass building originally erected in Hyde Park to house the Great Exhibition of 1851 (photo tour).
After the exhibition the building was moved to Upper Norwood where it stood from 1854 until 1936, when it was sadly destroyed by fire.
Today the park where it stood is still known as Crystal Palace Park, but where the building originally was, now stands the 222 metre Crystal Palace Transmitter, which is surprisingly, London’s 2nd tallest structure (second only to Canary Wharf!).
