Cuban Crow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Cuban Crow, Corvus nasicus, is one of four fascinating species of crow that occur on a few key islands in the West Indies.
A stocky, medium sized (40-42 cm in length) forest crow, this sociable bird can be found quite commonly over most of the large island of Cuba and on the nearby Isla de Pinos in woodland and areas that have been cleared for agriculture.
It is frequently found around farms and villages where it seems to have adapted quite well to living in relatively close contact with man.

Crow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jackdaw-, crow- and raven-sized forms seem to have existed since long ago and crows were regularly hunted by humans up to the Iron Age, documenting the evolution of the modern taxa.
Crows, and especially ravens, often feature in European legends or mythology as portents or harbingers of doom or death, because of their dark plumage, unnerving calls, and tendency to eat carrion.
In mythology and folklore as a whole, crows tend to be symbolic more of the spiritual aspect of death, or the transition of the spirit into the afterlife, whereas ravens tend more often to be associated with the negative (physical) aspect of death.

White-necked Crow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The White-necked Crow, Corvus leucognaphalus, is the largest (42-46 cm in length) of the four West Indian Crow species.
The fourth species from this region, the Palm Crow, Corvus palmarum would appear to be a later arrival (at least in evolutionary terms) and shows affinities with both the Fish Crow and the two Mexican species of North America.
A stocky bird, this forest crow is now found principally on the large sister island to Cuba of Hispaniola.

The true crows are in the genus Corvus; they are large Passerine birds.
As a group they show remarkable examples of intelligence and one species, the New Caledonian Crow, has recently been intensively studied because of its ability to manufacture and use its own tools in the day-to-day finding of food.
Crows appear to have evolved in central Asia and radiated out into North America (including Mexico), Africa, Europe, and Australia.

The Afro-Cuban Community in Ybor City and Tampa, 1886-1910 | Nancy Raquel Mirabel | OAH Magazine of History
Since being both fl and Cuban (meaning white) was incompatible with the racial mores of Florida during the Jim Crow era, Afro Cubans created a separate community and a fluid identity which reflected both their cultural heritage and race.
Moreover, the difficulty in defining Cubans solely on the basis of race becomes increasingly clear when one considers that during this period, the Anglo population in Tampa often referred to the Cuban community, regardless of race or background, as “Cuban niggers” (4).
In his famous “Liceo” speech, Marti demanded that white Cubans alter their racist attitudes in the name of a “Cuba Libre” by reminding Cubans that this would be a “revolution [in which] all Cubans, regardless of color have participated” (12).
