Cuban Missile Crisis - Encyclopedia Glossary Meaning Explanation Cuban Missile Crisis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
The Cuban Missile Crisis was a tense confrontation between the Soviet Union and the United States over the Soviet deployment of nuclear missiles in Cuba.
He confirmed the presence of the missiles in Cuba and announced the naval blockade as a quarantine zone of 500 nautical miles (926 km) around the Cuban coast, warned that the military was "prepared for any eventualities," and condemned the Soviet Union for "secrecy and deception".
The short time span of the Cuban Missile Crisis and the extensive documentation of the decision-making processes on both sides makes it an excellent case study for analysis of state decision-making.

Soviet reasoning was two-fold — first, to defend this new Communist state from an American or American-sponsored invasion, and second, to shift the nuclear balance of power away from the U.S. by putting American cities directly within the range of Soviet missiles.

By examining the development of the Cuban ethnic economy in Miami-Dade County, Florida, as a case study for immigrants who have displayed significant economic, social, and human capital wealth, this study attempts to assess some of the economic models that have been proposed to explain economic growth in the United States.
By applying the example of the Cuban community in Miami, the paper also proposes a model that integrates the contribution of human and social capital into the Solow growth model for macroeconomic growth.
In considering growth theory on the community level, this analysis relates the lessons demonstrated by the success of the Cuban community to a model of community economic empowerment, providing a theory that all communities could employ to develop a successful economy with high levels of human and social capital.
