A very important characteristic of Cuban music, especially in the years that this author has been involved with it, is the constant growth and evolution of the music.
Cubans are offended by the fact that there music is compared to, and called, salsa which has suffered from these very attacks of the industry.
Cuban musicians can belong to a group controlled by the state, as part of a group that had established itself as a quasi-independent company or as a free-lance musician for hire with groups or by impresarios from the outside.

In this set Boni and Kelly are rescuing some rhythms which were famous in Cuba during 1950 and 1960 such as dengue and pilón in an attempt to fuse Cuban music with some other Caribbean rhythms.

 Cuban Music Discussion
The reason being is that Cuban music is not advertised here in North America and because of this people just haven't had enough chance or opportunity to listen to it (or at least enough to form an opinion).
Many of all these Cuban songs were created long before the "SALSA" name was created for the Cuban music played in New York city, it is a real proof that salsa is just the Son, Mambo and Rumba.
I think that the cubans should be very grateful to the puertoricans and other latin people, since they have been showing Cuban music to the entire world.

This will not only foster a “music is free” attitude in which consumers will believe they are part of a community, it will allow consumers to feel as if they are contributing something to their preferred artists.
And don't forget that the music biz is perhaps the only industry that routinely cheats the artists and producres who are their biggest asset.
In an attempt to thwart piracy they are proposing that music users be required to present their fingerprint to verify that they are authorized to hear said music.
