25.1 The village of Cuckfield occupies an elevated position to the west of Haywards Heath and is surrounded by attractive Wealden countryside.
Newbury Pond to the south of the village is a nature reserve leased by the Sussex Wildlife Trust and is valuable for its aquatic flora and fauna.
Cuckfield Churchyard is also of interest for its rich variety of grasses and wild flowers.

Having observed that in the background of the sketch the spire of the church at Cuckfield (TQ 303 245) is shown aligned with Ditchling Beacon in the far distance, Gallois and Worssam (1993) suggested that the sketch was probably of the southeast corner of the quarry (TQ 301 253).
Firstly, the Cuckfield sample and indeed all the other samples analysed in the course of this research, except notably the Hypsilophodon Bed sample, represent attritional assemblages.
Of the bones recovered from the channel deposits quarried at Cuckfield it would seem that a small proportion, those with grit attached to them, ended up in the channel lags deposited in the deepest, fastest flowing parts of the channels.

STAPLEFIELD is a scattered hamlet, 2 and a half miles north-west from Cuckfield, and 5 and a half south from Crawley (its post town): it is a separate ecclesiastical district, with a small church (St. Mark's), in the Early English style, erected in 1847.

Nestled in the heart of the Weald, in between the North and South Downs, the village of Cuckfield was an important stage in the London to Brighton journey and still to this day is officially accorded the status of town.
The elders of the town decided that there was no future in railways and although the route was planned to pass through Cuckfield, approval for this was not given and a diversion had to be planned to bypass Cuckfield and pass through the hamlet of Haywards Heath.
The first records of a doctor in Cuckfield were back in the 1800's when Dr. Wells would tie his horse to the ring outside his manor house, Marshalls, which was used as a doctor's surgery until 1974.

Admission is free, but as the museum is an independent charity run entirely by volunteers, donations are appreciated.
The museum's Chinoiserie longcase clock is a fine example of the work of Edward Gatland who was buried in the Cuckfield churchyard in 1780.
Two big names featured in the museum are the paleontologist Gideon Mantell who discovered the iguanodon fossils and the artist Robert Bevan, friend of Gauguin and founder member of the Camden Town Group.

Rhodesia had recently declared U.D.I. so we in Cuckfield followed suit and the Independent State of Cuckfield was born.
In 1971 the High Bridge on the A272 between Cuckfield and Ansty collapsed, Ansty was extremely worried at being cut off from shops, Doctors, Hospital etc. The county council refused to consider a temporary bridge and said we must wait until they create a permanent replacement.
A long battle ensued but, at length, the council dropped the idea and Cuckfield was spared this horror.

On Sunday 8 of August Cuckfield Golf Centre members met with Cuckfield Tennis Club members for the inaugural Cuckfield Golf and Tennis Challenge Trophy.
 The Tennis Club played host in the morning and took an early lead, but after some refreshment provided by tennis club members and a quick cold shower Cuckfield Golf Centre came back with a vengeance to take the trophy by a narrow victory when all the points had been counted.
The day ended with players enjoying a traditional clotted cream tea and champagne at the Golf Centre during the prize giving ceremony.
