Topic: Cucujiformia

In the News (Fri 1 Jun 12)

 University Of Alaska, Stories
Ladybug or Lady Beetle (Coccinellidae) is the one beetle everybody can identify on sight, but did you know it is not a bug (Hemiptera); instead it is a beetle (Coleoptera).
The lady beetle belongs to a whole family of beetles called Coccinellidae, which belong to the superfamliy Cucujoida that belongs to the series Cucujiformia within the suborder Polyphaga of the beetles (Coleoptera).
Just in the family of Coccineallidae there are over 4,500 lady bugs known at this time, and entomologists (insect researchers) are still counting.

"The world genera of Lymexylidae (Coleoptera: Cucujiformia: Lymexyloidea) are revised, including descriptions of two new genera.
Neohylecoetus Kurosawa is synonymized with Melittomma Murray, and Hylecoetopsis Lane is excluded from the Lymexylidae (and presumed to belong to the Cleridae).

Leaf Beetles (family Chrysomelidae, superfamily Chrysomeloidea, infraorder Cucujiformia, suborder Polyphaga)
Some Leaf Beetles, such as the Colorado Potato Beetles, were major crop pests because they were imported from outside North America while their natural predators were left behind.
These are no relations to the Shining Leaf Chafers of the Scarabaeidae family.

There will be an interesting section on "Systematics and Phylogeny", and a small symposium on Cucujiformia/Cleroidea/Cleridae is planned.
Invited speakers so far are Rich Leschen (Systematics and evolution of Cyllodini, Nitidulidae), Weston Opitz (Internal organs in the higher classification on Cleridae), Alfried Vogler (Basal relationships of Cucujiformia inferred from ribosomal RNA sequences) and R.G. (Phylogenetic relationships within the Cleroidea and Cleridae - confrontation of morphological and DNA data (Coleoptera, Cucujiformia).
We hope that other participants will join this symposium, because this would be a special chance to present the entomological community some ideas on Cleroidea/Cleridae systematics.
