Herbal Descriptions - Cucurbita - Curcubita maxima   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
When used as a teniafuge or anthelmintic, Cucurbita seeds are ordinarily administered in the form of the ground seeds themselves, as an infusion (tea), or as an emulsion made by beating the seeds with powdered sugar and milk or water.
It occurs only in the seeds of Cucurbita species, but its concentration is quite variable even in seeds of the same species.
This variability probably accounts for reports in the literature that Cucurbita seeds are either unreliable or ineffective as a teniafuge.

It is recommended that these pumpkins are harvested in September because they tend to develop a blue tinge when harvested later.
When I grew this variety I think the leaves had a soft texture, which means it could be C. maxima.
According to seed componies this plant is C. maxima, not C. pepo conferming the Boo-Boo (sorry bad joke) on this plant listing.

Solution Structure and Backbone Dynamics of Recombinant Cucurbita maxima Trypsin Inhibitor-V Determined by NMR Spectroscopy,
The solution structure of recombinant Cucurbita maxima trypsin inhibitor-V (rCMTI-V), whose N-terminal is unacetylated and carries an extra glycine residue, was determined by means of two-dimensional (2D) homo and 3D hetero NMR experiments in combination with a distance geometry and simulated annealing algorithm.
A total of 927 interproton distances and 123 torsion angle constraints were utilized to generate 18 structures.

I look in the Mémo Larousse encyclopedia and find out that citrouille and potiron are the fruit of different plants-citrouille from Cucurbita pepo and potiron from Cucurbita maxima.
Then I notice in the Webster's New World Dictionary that pumpkin in British English refers to these two types of plants as well as Cucurbita moschata.
And then I see that the Hachette-Oxford dictionary claims a potiron is called a winter squash in American English.
