Burrendong Dam is a large dam near Wellington which impounds the waters of the Macquarie River and its tributary the Cudgegong River for flood control and irrigation.
The upper reaches of the Macquarie River were first discovered by European settlers in 1813 and the river was named for the then Governor of New South Wales, Lachlan Macquarie.

“The environmental flow rules for the Cudgegong River established by the Water Sharing Plan require that when rainfall in the catchment produces inflows to Windamere Dam, then a proportion of the water flowing into the dam is released to the river as environmental flow.
State Water is coordinating the release from Windamere Dam and warns landholders along the river to take extra care when they are in or around the river during the next few days.

In February 1972, while fossicking on the Cudgegong River bank outside the central western NSW town of Mudgee, I spotted an oddly-shaped fossil impression on a small ironstone lump, cemented in a deposit of conglomerate.
Digging it out I found the impression to be that of a human palate with dental arch, measuring 6 cm, the teeth marks clearly visible beneath the 1 cm high palate.
Twenty-five years later, in June 1997, while again fossicking along the same river barely 5 km from the town, I chanced to find the 3m high bank of a long-vanished creek that once flowed into the river.

These releases are then subject to a rapid ‘shut-down’ which deprives the flood event of the tailing-off effect that is vital in reducing impacts such as bank slumping and the stranding of fish on the floodplain.
This is seen as an exciting new step in environmental flow management and hopefully it will forge the way for other valleys to adopt a similar management strategy.
