Jake and I concluded that the southeastern corner of the Cuilapa quad was a Pliocene-aged volcano which we named Ixhuatán after the town of Santa María Ixhuatán that is situated near its summit.
A Pleistocene basalt flow, from one of the nearby cinder cones in the Cuilapa area, filled an old valley and formed columnar joints as it cooled.
Tecuamburro is on the southern boundary of the Cuilapa quadrangle.
We got on our bus and headed to downtown Cuilapa which is about 10 minutes away from our hotel (when you have "Mario", a loco Guatemalan bus driver that speeds around blind corners).

In 1998, an eye program and a surgical program at the hospital in Cuilapa, Guatemala were added to the mission trips.
Members volunteering their help from the Cuilapa Lions club are in charge of crowd control.
They travel to each of the small surrounding villages during the weeks before our arrival to issue about 2000 colored and numbered tickets to patients who are to be scheduled for the clinic.
Knowing there were literally thousand of people walking miles and waiting in the hot sun to see us made it hard to even take a break to eat, but sure made it easier to sleep at night.
Finally, and most importantly, an incredible group of local lions and community volunteers from Nueva Santa Rosa and Cuilapa, helped move patients from place to place, run for needed supplies, contact important local individuals, and provide snacks, juice and lunches to the team.
Pepe (owner of a small shop in Cuilapa), and Carol (English teacher) have been in contact with us from our first planning stages in October of 1996 and always there to meet us, greet us and help provide for all we need.
The medical supplies went to San Juan de Dios Hospital to aid the countless poor of my country.

The rest of the trip will be spent in Santa Rosa with visits to that diocese's only hospital, located in the capital of Cuilapa, and to an outpatient center and a small health post in the diocese.
The group also plans to visit small villages with no health facilities at all.

During the off season, I scouted a bit and found some good dry woods along the road from Cuilapa to Chiquimulilla.

The first public trial ever of an alleged Guatemalan guerrilla began and ended today with the accused being acquitted of the most serious charges.
After more than a year in jail Timoteo Ruperto Navarijo Chutan was ordered released by a court in Cuilapa, Santa Rosa province, which found there was not sufficient evidence to support the charges of treason, rebellion, sedition, activities against the internal security of the nation, and membership in illegal groups.
The three judges who heard the case ruled that Navarijo's captors had not respected due process and therefore statements he made while in army hands could not be accepted as evidence.

Berrio "called the lords of Cuilapa and Oaxaca together and commanded them not to serve the Marquis nor this witness [Diego de Guinea] who was in the villages for the Marquis, and Berrio commanded that if Guinea served himself of the villages he would have a penalty of 400 castellanos."

The Career and Communities Learning Center has designed a unique experience that will become mandatory for all freshmen.
Akin to an internship, the program will send the hearty youths to Cuilapa, Guatemala to take a new required course titled "Slv 1014 -- U Inc. Servitude and Critical Manufacturing: Emphasis on Sportswear." The ingenious course will give students important hands-on skills such as basic sewing, embroidery, and folding.
Tuition for this course is low considering its number; a total of $1,014 for the entire year.
