  Cuirass - LoveToKnow 1911
Thus, the globose form of the breast-armour of the Black Prince, in his effigy in Canterbury cathedral, 1376, intimates that a cuirass as well as a hauberk is to be considered to have been covered by the royalty-emblazoned jupon of the prince.
The cuirass, thus worn in the 14th century, was always made of sufficient length to rest on the hips; otherwise, if not thus supported, it must have been suspended from the shoulders, in which case it would have effectually interfered with the free and vigorous action of the wearer.
Early in the 15th century, the entire panoply of plate, including the cuirass, began to be worn without any surcoat; but in the concluding quarter of the century the short surcoat, with full short sleeves, known as the tabard, was in general use over the armour.

 Piekeman's cuirass
Cuirass: comprising a breastplate and a backplate, held together by leather shoulder straps with iron plates mounted on them and by a narrow leather waistbelt.
The pikemen in the Dutch army continued to carry these armours in the second half of the 17th century, although the tassets gradually became shorter.
The lavishly applied brass rivets gave these cuirasses a rich appearance, underlining the status of their wearers as elite troops among the infantry.

Not a cuirass by any means, our 7" wide kidney belt is still considered "body armour" and is crafted from heavy 13/15 oz armor grade leather, fastened by an extra heavy duty 3" wide buckle.
This heavily tooled front and back protection cuirass is crafted from 8/10 oz leather and is primarily for ceremonial use, due to the tooling and extra ornamental detail. This finely crafted piece also ncludes the subarmalis (the tongue shaped pteriges which hang from the bottom of the front and back of the cuirass).
Cuirass is crafted from 13/15 oz heavy leather and includes all 1 1/2" buckles and straps for heavy duty wear.

Cuirass (French cuirasse, Latin coriaceus, made of leather, from corium, the original breastplate being of leather), the plate armour, whether formed of a single piece of metal or other rigid material or composed of two or more pieces, which covers the front of the wearer's person.
In the 16th century, when occasionally, and by personages of exalted rank, splendid surcoats were worn over the armour, the cuirassits breastpiece during the first half of the century, globular in form was constantly reinforced by strong additional plates attached to it by rivets or screws.
Corslets provided with both breast and back pieces were worn by foot-soldiers in the 17th century, while their mounted comrades were equipped in heavier and stronger cuirasses; and these defences continued in use after the other pieces of armour, one by one, had gradually been laid aside.

Helping to build a better Lorica Musculata since MMIV
I've spent most of this website discussing just the cuirass, its materials, manufacture and decoration, but there are many other features associated with the musculata that should be discussed, including the pteruges, the subarmalis, parazonium an the equestrian boots.
Later in the imperial period, when the straight-line cuirass was replaced or modified to have a lower anatomical waistline, the upper row of pteruges was replaced by a single or double row of so-called "tongue" pteruges, because they are shaped like a tongue.
It also suggests that the subarmalis and cuirass, fit rather snuggly together and probably to the wearer as well, since it's hard to believe that the flap would stay in place like this if the subarmalis and cuirass were not attached in some way.

cuirass | | Dictionary & Translation by Babylon
This article is devoted to the type of armour known as a cuirass.
Cuirass (French cuirasse, Latin coriaceus, made of leather, from corium, the original breastplate being of leather), the plate armour, is formed of a single piece of metal or other rigid material or composed of two or more pieces, which covers the front of the wearer's person.
In a suit of armour, however, since this important piece was generally worn in connection with a corresponding defence for the back, the term cuirass commonly is understood to imply the complete body-armour, including both the breast and the back plates.

 BODY ARMOR
The muscle cuirass is one of the earliest forms of armor, dating back in its Greek form to the sixth century BC or even earlier.
There seem to be two types of muscle cuirass in common use, one which terminated in a straight line at the upper waist (the "short" version), and one with a curved extension which covered the lower abdomen.
A custom-made cuirass is the best choice as far as accuracy and comfort go, but a properly made custom cuirass can cost upwards of $1,500 and require a wait of months or years.
