Cul de Sac's monster rhythm section of Jonathan LaMaster (bass) and Jon Proudman (drums) give the upbeat pieces shape, becoming the hulking mass at the center around which the other players orbit.
Supposedly Suzuki rang up Cul de Sac after hearing one of their albums, and it's not surprising he heard something in the band that he could work with.
On "Baltimore 5" Cul de Sac quivers quietly in the background, spinning out the occasional guitar arpeggio from the cloud of cymbal wash, while Suzuki, mixed too high, babbles on and on.

The Post-Rock Phenomenon, featuring Cul de Sac
While they claim great respect for the Village Voice’s Simon Reynolds (who is most oft-cited as the term’s progenitor and torch-bearer), Cul de Sac makes it clear that they’ll hang their hats on the nail of their music, not on the music industry’s category of the week.
Rather than tipping their hats back toward the legacy of glam rock, dub, or punk, Cul de Sac draw their reeling, often improvisatory lines and propulsive, tumbling, tympanic percussion more strongly from the "krautrock" scene of Europe in the early 70s.
Cul de Sac have more in common with Can than with Sly and Robbie, and have listened to more Stockhausen than Mannheim Steamroller.

Cul De Sac uses only a small snippet from the five-part harmony vocals of the Harmonists' "Creole Love Call" - taken straight from the actual 78 and then digitally edited and sequenced to fit into the band's ten-minute "Dust of Butterflies." The results are astonishing.
Death of the Sun doesn't just see Cul De Sac at its best, it sees music at its most powerful and rewarding.

Whatever Fahey was driving at it’s clear he was onto something: if nothing else, Cul de Sac is a funny name for a band that has spent the last 13 years aggressively avoiding creative dead-ends.
In the liner notes to the final John Fahey record, Red Cross, Cul de Sac’s Glenn Jones reminisces with some fondness about the personality clashes that plagued/bolstered The Epiphany of Glenn Jones, his band’s 1997 collaboration with the legendary guitar innovator.
