	Culatra Island - A guide to the anchorage and village
		The anchorage is on the inside of a sandy island with beautiful beaches, particularly on the southern shore.
		The anchorage at Faro is beneath the flight path to Faro airport - one of the busiest in Europe whilst at Olhao the anchorage is in the channel leading to the commercial port.
		Culatra anchorage is open to the west wind and therefore it is not recommended that a boat should be left unattended for long periods in the winter months.

		Culatra is a very dirty fisherman village, you' ve to cross the village then the dunes and there' s the great beach, with no people and very clean waters.
		You have to cross the island to the coastside walking 10 mn by the hot sand dunes or walk 40 mn from farol beach.

		These three lagoon islands are accessible by boat from Olhao several times a day between June and September, three times a day in winter.
		One boat goes to Farol and Culatra the smallest island in the west, and another to Armona in the east.
		All three islands are of flat dunes with very good beaches.

		Ria Formosa lagoon, located in Algarve, south of Portugal, is a barrier islands system that communicates with the sea trough 6 inlets.
		Five of these inlets are natural born and have mobility characteristics and the 6th is an artificial inlet that has been opened with the purpose of making it easier to access to the port of Faro.
		In order to maintain this new inlet, two breakwaters were built, starting one in Culatra island and the other in Barreta island.

		CS4B: Bugio Island: even without water and power (this is the real DXpedition) is one of the most beautiful places in the world.
		Perhaps the value of islands is too big with being multipliers plus the 15 points.
		Would be useful if islands with low/no resident amateur population had higher bonus to encourage more island searching by big guns.

		The southernmost island of the Orkney Island group, South Ronaldsay is linked to Mainland Orkney via Burray by the Churchill Barriers which were constructed during the Second World War to prevent German U-Boats from entering Scapa Flow.
		Some are also employed in the oil industry on the neighbouring island of Flotta, the oil pipeline from the North Sea to the Flotta oil terminal passing through the north end of the island.
		The island counts as EU-059 for the RSGB Islands on the Air programme and is the rarest of the numbered UK IOTA island groups.

	Faro Sailing School - Sailing Area
		The lagoon is protected by sandy offshore islets with wonderful beaches, a great place for swimming.
		In the evening we can row ashore to the island of Culatra where you can sample superb freshly caught fish with the locals and the trip back after dark in the dinghy is a marvel as the water is rich in phosphorescence.
		The tidal range in the Algarve region is a gentle 3 metres at Springs and 1 metre at Neaps allowing for a great introduction to tidal sailing for the novice whilst producing tidal streams strong enough to tax the more experienced sailor.
