Culhwch and Olwen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Culhwch and Olwen is a Welsh story that survives in only two manuscripts: a complete version in the Red Book of Hergest, ca.
Olwen is receptive to Culhwch's attraction, but she cannot marry him unless her father agrees, and he, unable to survive past his daughter's wedding, will not consent until Culhwch completes a series of about forty impossible-sounding tasks.
Fortunately for Culhwch (and the reader), the completion of only a few of these tasks is recorded and the giant is killed, leaving Olwen free to marry her lover.

Culhwch (pronounced /kʉlˈhuːχ/, or "Kilhooch" with the "ch" as in the Scottish "loch"), in Welsh mythology, is the son of Kilydd son of Kelyddon and Goleuddydd, a cousin of Arthur and the protagonist of the story Culhwch and Olwen found in the Mabinogion.
According to the narrative, Culhwch is born to his maddened mother Goleuddydd after she is frightened by a herd of swine.
Olwen's father, Ysbaddaden, is a vicious giant who will die if his daughter marries, so he requires Culhwch to complete a number of impossible tasks, the most prominent of which (within the tale as it survives) being Culhwch's gaining of his cousin Arthur's military assistance, and the hunting of the wild boar, Twrch Trwyth.

While Culhwch and Olwen, also found in the Mabinogion collection, is primarily an Arthurian tale, in which the hero Culhwch enlists Arthur's aid in winning the hand of Olwen, daughter of Ysbaddaden the Giant, it is packed with background detail, much of it mythological in nature.
The conditions placed on Culhwch by his mother are similar to those placed on Llew Llaw Gyffes by Arianrhod, and Culhwch's arrival at Arthur's court is reminiscent of the Irish god Lug's arrival at the court of king Nuada in Cath Maige Tuireadh.
