Visvarupa - Report Vol. II  Page 3
As Oganaj lies directly on this line of advance, the initial Maitraka contact with the Vi¿var£pa cult may well have been made there, and the Kathlal sculpture is therefore quite possibly a 7th-century version of that image, representing an eastward expansion of the cult within the growing Maitraka kingdom.
That the Vaiku¸¶ha cult itself was thereby elevated through its association with Vi¿var£pa, is indicated by the shift of the icon from the external wall of the sanctum, as at Sandera, to the interior of the sanctum, as at Valam.
The early Vi¿var£pa cult in Gujarat therefore arose at Samalaji in second quarter of the 6th century under the early Kalacuri dynasty, spread southward and eastward during the same century, and was perpetuated farther to the south-west under the Maitraka dynasty in the 7th century, after which it appears to have died out.

This epic image of the just king as an exponent of dikê, standing in his blooming garden, corresponds to the religious image of the hero in hero-cult, "planted" in the local "mother earth" as a talisman of fertility and prosperity for the community that worships him or her.
Ordinarily, the hero cult was based on the presence of the sôma 'body' (corpse) of the hero in the "mother earth" of the given locale.
At the moment of worship, the sacred precinct of the cult hero could become notionally identical to the paradise-like abode of immortalization from which he or she returns to his worshippers.

In religion, a 'cult image may be revered as an icon or deprecated as an idol.
A core image (or core dump, from magnetic core memory, the predominant RAM technology of the 1960s) is a faithful copy of the data stored in the main memory of a computer or process.

 Cult (religion)
Other manifestations of the cult of a deity are the preservation of relics or the creation of images, such as icons (usually connoting a flat painted image) or idols, and the identification of sacred places, hilltops and mountains, fissures and caves, springs and pools, or groves, which may be the seat of an oracle.
The cult of a religion, as opposed to its sacred writings (" scriptures"), its theology or myths, or the personal faith of its believers, has traditionally referred to the totality of external religious practice and observance, the neglect of which is impiety.
"Cult" and "cultist" have recently accrued negative connotations that are dealt with at the entry Cult.

ET&S [2(4)] - Sara Dexter - Collective Representations and Educational Technology as School Reform: Or, How Not to Produce a Cargo Cult
Cargo cults are presented as a conceptual metaphor of how cultural understandings can result in completely ineffective means applied toward an end, providing a generative image for examining school culture and its impact on school change and explaining why ubiquitous technology use often proves elusive.
It illustrates the characteristic pattern of cargo cults, showing how the believers were convinced that correctly carrying out the cargo ritual would entice the gods into delivering the desired cargo to them, so as to rectify the trading and status inequities between them and their colonizers.
Cargo cults lasted months or years depending on the leader and followers and their patience in waiting for the cargo.

Behind the grisly details and the gory sensationalism of the record-setting mass suicide in Uganda March 17 by former Catholics involved in a cult known as the Movement for the Ten Commandments of God is the story of a Church in crisis that looks like a mirror-image of Amchurch.
Among the various reports on the cult's mass suicide, one of the most insightful and intriguing was provided by Charles Onyango-Obbo, a reporter for Uganda's Monitor, published March 22.

As president, he developed a pervasive personality cult, ran an authoritarian government, and maintained power through the devastating Iran-Iraq War ( 1980 – 1988) and the first Persian Gulf War ( 1991), which both corresponded with a sharp decline in living standards and the human rights situation.
He appeared in the costumes of the Bedouin, the traditional clothes of the Iraqi peasant (which he essentially wore during his childhood), and even Kurdish clothing, but also appeared in Western suits, projecting the image of an urbane and modern leader.
As a sign of his consolidation of power, Saddam's personality cult pervaded Iraqi society.

 Beware of 'Cargo Cult' Coding
The image that came to mind as I wrote last week's column was the "cargo cult." In the years after World War II, South Pacific islanders were seen to imitate the behaviors of the armies that had come and gone during that conflict.
In checking details of where and when the cargo cults were observed, I discovered that others have applied this same label to other flawed IT practices.
"The first principle is that you must not fool yourself," said the late physicist Richard Feynman in the 1974 Caltech commencement address that's often considered the origin of the "cargo cult" phrase, at least as used by coders.

My Conclusion » The anti-cult cult phenomenon
Let’s take a look, for instance, at the classic image of the “dangerous sect” that the anti-cult movement has drummed into us; a movement of abusive, potentially harmful and blindly convinced brainwashed, demented fanatics who will use any and all means toward the furthering of their cause, including abduction, “brainwashing,” violence and even suicide.
Thus, it seems to me, that this “cult” (the anti-cult movement) has all the potential to be, and in fact has proven its self to be, a truly dangerous and menacing movement!
No doubt, the “victims” of the anti-cultcult” will justify their own involvement in this cruel deed saying; “we have done evil that good may come.” No doubt, this was also the same logic once employed by the “holy inquisitors.”
