Topic: Cult status

Cult film - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A cult film is a movie that attracts a small but devoted group of fans, usually failing to achieve considerable success outside that group.
Although films of all types of genres and plot conventions become cult films, the horror and science fiction genres produce a large number of cult films, perhaps due to the devoted nature of these genres' fan bases.
Many significant cult films are independently made and were not expected by their creators to have much mainstream success.

 Cult Movies, Cult Films
Cult films are usually strange, quirky, offbeat, eccentric, oddball, or surreal, with outrageous and cartoony characters or plots, garish sets and they are often considered controversial.
…cult movie audiences are less an internally coherent “taste culture” than a series of frequently opposed and contradictory reading strategies that are defined through a sense of their difference to an equally incoherently imagined “normality”, a loose conglomeration of corporate power, lower middle class conformity and prudishness, academic elitism and political conspiracy (Jancovich, 2002: 315).
Cult movies are often referred to as though they were a very specific and particular genre, but this is not the case, since such films fall into an enormous variety of different formal and stylistic categories.

Cult television - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cult television, like cult figures, cult film and cult radio, attracts a band of aficionados devoted to a specific television program or unreal universe.
This is what is usually meant when a program is said to have "reached cult status." Even if a group of people agree on this definition of "cult status", arguments on a show's status of this type are common as the "moderate" band has two highly subjective borders.
Many shows that some people found strongly compelling were not hits in their original runs, and quite a few well-loved shows had only a season (or less) worth of material.

ICC Meet Two Criteria for Cult Status
Generally speaking, a religious group is considered a cult when it fulfills at least one of two criteria: its teachings are deviant from historical orthodox teachings and foundational doctrinal beliefs, and the group practices subtle (or sometimes blatant) psychological manipulation of its members and potential members.
It is also well established that Moonies are often deemed a cult because of the excessive control they exercise over their members.
Although it is possible their practices have changed, the BCC has also been rightfully classified as a cult in the past by fulfilling the second criteria of a cult: psychological manipulation of its members.

Cult-ivating Terror   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
No prospective cult would attract many devotees if among the benefits of membership it included: subtle mind control, physical beatings, incarceration, daily insult sessions, etc. In short, 'cults' as they are popularly defined, are definitely not 'what you see is what you get' type organisations.
Without doubt real cults practicing some form of mind programming have existed and continue to exist, yet due to the aforementioned human nature and nature of governments and those that govern, it is almost inevitable that many have been and will be wrongly accused, and deliberately so.
Another example of a much publicised 'cult' confrontation, where the destruction of the group and the deaths of its members in a horrific fire was the ultimate outcome, occurred at Waco Texas in 1993.

The penalty for talking about poets in universal terms before, or instead of, talking about their particular achievements is to devalue what they do while fetishizing what they are.
I've always interpreted the cargo cult metaphor as describing a case where unsophisticated people "go through the motions" in imitation of a respected and powerful group with more advanced capabilities, without any understanding of the real functions of the imitated activities or the causal processes behind them.
But for James in this passage, it seems that "cargo cult status" means something like "value assigned blindly, without any understanding of the real basis of such value".
