  Germany Culture
Germany's older regions, was custodian to the greater portion of the country's rich cultural legacy.
Yet some of the greatest monuments of Germany's cultural and historical achievement were located in the German Democratic Republic, including the Wartburg of Luther near Eisenach, the Weimar of Goethe, the Leipzig of Bach; a large share of prewar Germany's art treasures rested in East Germany, especially in East Berlin and Dresden.
Conversely, East Germany, while remaining surprisingly conservative in its adherence to some aspects of the received tradition, was powerfully molded by the dictates of a socialist ideology of predominantly Soviet inspiration.

But the impact of the short-lived upheavals of 1848-49 deserves attention because this brief period of unprecedented legal and political permissiveness revealed some of the tensions in mid-century German society that were normally concealed under a blanket of official repression.

 Literature - Culture - Germany - Europe
From the beginnings of Germany in the 9th century through the Middle Ages, classical Latin was the language of literature and theology in the country.
One of the first writers to stand out beyond Germany was 18th-century dramatist Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, whose play Nathan the Wise (1779; translated 1781) argued for religious toleration.
The lyrical poetry and novels of Goethe and his drama Faust (1808-1832; translated 1834) and the plays and poems of Schiller brought together classical form and the romantic emotions that marked much of the literature to come.
