When Columbus reached the northern coast of South America at the beginning of the 16th century, the area that is now Guyana was inhabited by two distinct groups, the Arawak who lived along the coast and the Carib who lived in the interior.
The urban/rural split between the Africans (descendants of the original slaves) and Asians is reflected in the main divisions between Guyana’s two main political parties – the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), which draws predominantly Indian support, and the People’s National Congress (PNC), formed in 1957 as a mainly ethnic African breakaway from the PPP.
A major obstacle to Guyana’s future economic progress is a shortage of trained personnel, especially in the fields of management and technical expertise; the emigration rate remains high, and only serves to compound this long-term problem.

A person born outside Guyana after the commencement of the Constitution shall become a citizen of Guyana at the date of his birth if at the date his father or his mother is a citizen of Guyana otherwise that by virtue of this article.

Before the arrival of Europeans, the region was inhabited by Warrau Indians, and the Carib and Arawak tribes, who named it Guiana, which means "land of waters," due to the fact that it is surrounded by the rivers of the Orinoco, Amazon, Rio Negro and the Atlantic Ocean.
The Dutch settled in Guyana in the late 16th century, but their control ended when the British became the de facto rulers in 1796.
Guyana achieved independence in May 1966, and Guyana became a republic on February 23, 1970, the anniversary of the Cuffy slave rebellion.

I was sorely disappointed........The colonial history and more recent political history are long on factual details, but superficially analyzed....and the "culture" element of the book is more about folklore than culture in a pure anthropological sense, with dozens and dozens of pages of local sayings and idioms, but no story to hold them together....
