Mauritius is part of the Mascarene Islands, with the French island of Réunion 200 km to the southwest.
While Arab and Malay sailors knew of Mauritius as early as the 10th century and Portuguese sailors first visited it on 1505, the island was not inhabited until 1638 when it was colonized by the Dutch in 1638.
The island of Mauritius itself is formed around a central plateau, with its highest peak in the southwest, Piton de la Riviere Noire at 828 m.

While there is some speculation that the island may have been known to Arab traders plying Indian Ocean trade routes in the 10th - 13th centuries, the remarkably large, lushly vegetated and completely uninhabited island was discovered by Portuguese explorers in the 16th century, and subsequently settled by the Dutch.
