Culvert - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A culvert is a structure used to enclose a flowing body of water.
When used to transport water in streams or rivers, the capacity of the culvert(s) is generally lower than the capacity of the river itself.
When this occurs on a regular basis, the culverts may be replaced with a different type of structure, such as a bridge, that presents less obstruction to the flow of water.

Fact Sheet: - Newfoundland Fact Sheet - Culvert Installations
Culverts should be sufficiently sized and installed such that scouring of the outlet streambed does not occur as a result of increased water velocities in the culvert.
Excessive culvert slope, reduced culvert capacity due to countersinking and maintenance of the 200 mm minimum depth of flow, and back watering due to the creation of an outlet pool should be considered when selecting the required culvert diameter to allow fish passage and pass peak flows.
For stacked/multiple culverts, pools should be installed with the fish passage culvert oriented to the center of the pool to allow for a smooth transition of water from the culvert to the watercourse.

Culvert Design. Inlet and Outlet Control
Culverts have been utilized for thousands of years as a means to transmit water under walkways or roads.
If any of these conditions are unacceptable, then the proper culvert diameter and number of culverts must be selected prior to installation in order to convey all of the anticipated water through the pipe(s).
Outlet control means that flow through the culvert is limited by friction between the flowing water and the culvert barrel.

 Chehalis Culvert
We used a new type of culvert that was cost effective and provided the water and fish a passage criterion that was needed for a 100 year flooding event without major disruption of the stream processes and was environmentally friendly.
The culvert barrier on this property was a 33 foot long, 3.2 feet in diameter corrugated round steel culvert under 5 feet of fill through an 11 foot wide road.
The substrate upstream from culvert is primarily predominantly fine sediment within beaver ponds, with pockets of exposed gravels between ponds and in the headwaters.

WSDOT - SR 92 - Stevens Creek Culvert Replacement
Culverts are important for both driver safety and the environment.
The old culvert on State Route 92 was three feet in diameter and was blocking fish from passing through to Stevens Creek.
To ensure that the culvert at this location does a better job keeping the roads safe and letting fish pass we replaced it with a new larger 12 foot concrete culvert.

 CE531: Culvert Design
We are asked to design various culverts for a 30 foot wide road that runs from the east to the west through this watershed.
The size of the culvert should be adequate to carry the 10-year flow without any headwater on the culvert and the 50-year flow with little or no overtopping on the road.
To design this culvert to fit the required parameters set forth at the beginning of this report, a program called HY-8 will be run.

Before the shelter was set into place, the culvert was rotated down so the small attached culvert was on the side of the main culvert.

Beaver Solutions - Culvert Protective Fences - beaver dam and flooding solutions
Once a culvert protective fence is installed, if the beavers attempt to dam against the fence at the culvert inlet, the fence will direct them farther away from the culvert.
Maintenance on a well designed culvert protective fence is minimal and typically consists of three to four times a year removing sticks and leaves that floated against the fence.
Unfortunately, as opposed to our CulverClear TM culvert protective fences the cylindrical fence does not decrease the stimulus for beaver damming, is more difficult to maintain, eliminates the ability to access the inside of the culvert, and in our experience has an unacceptably high failure rate of approximately 30%.

While the outlet photo indicates that the barrel of the culvert is operating at only a fraction of capacity, the inlet is almost fully submerged and is very close to capacity.
The pond is required because the stage-storage characteristics upstream of the culvert must be evaluated in order to determine the head at the culvert inlet.
A culvert outlet also has the ability to consider entrance loss conditions (which are closely related to inlet control) as well as certain tailwater situations.

Olympic NP: Replace Culvert, Quinault North Shore Road (FONSI)
The existing culvert is a corrugated metal pipe 6.5 feet (2 meters) in diameter, which is much smaller than the 21.5-foot (6.6 meters) minimum recommended by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife for proper fish passage.
The culvert is a barrier to fish movement and is causing degradation of the streambed.
Movement of fish upstream through these culverts and the downstream movement of woody debris would be limited in comparison to the benefits provided by Alternative B. Alternative B also provides the least damage to the natural resources of the area.

 91 Wn.2d 550, NOVENSON v. SPOKANE CULVERT
The trial court granted Spokane Culvert's motion for summary judgment, concluding as a matter of law that appellant was an employee of Spokane Culvert, thus limited in recovery to benefits under the industrial insurance act.
Consent to an employment agreement with Spokane Culvert should not be imputed to Novenson as a matter of law; material factual questions exist regarding the plaintiff's consent to enter a contract of hire.
The response of the majority is: (1) A homily on the iniquity of defendant for hiring through a labor broker, which seems at worst an argument ad hominem and at best an argument properly settled by the legislature; and (2) the allegation that certain material factual questions exist regarding plaintiff's consent.

The diameter of the pipe would be 25 feet (7700mm), which is larger than the minimum culvert diameter size of 6600mm set by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (the current culvert is 2000mm).
The new culvert would be 40 percent countersunk and backfilled with streambed material to accommodate streambed changes.
This scenario was dropped because the bridge and culvert replacements can be constructed without the use of a temporary bypass and the added environmental impacts associated with it; and the excessive grade was considered unacceptable for fish passage.
