Cumberland is one of the 39 traditional counties of England.
In 1974, the area also became part of the new administrative county of Cumbria, along with Westmorland and parts of Lancashire and Yorkshire.
The name continues in use as a geographical and cultural term, and survives in Cumberland sausages and various organisations and companies, such as the local newspapers The Cumberland News, and The West Cumberland Times and Star, and the Cumberland Building Society.

"CUMBERLAND, the extreme N.W. county of England, bounded on the N. by Dumfriesshire and Roxburghshire, on the E. by Northumberland and Durham, on the S.E. by Westmoreland, Lancashire, and the estuary of the Duddon, and on the W. by the Irish Sea and the Solway Frith.
During the Roman occupation of this island, Cumberland was inhabited by the Voluntii and the Brigantes a brave and independent race, who gave very great trouble to the invaders.
In 1745, the city of Carlisle surrendered to Charles Edward, and being retaken by the Duke of Cumberland the leaders in the movement were severely punished by him.
