Smith explained that the Village of Cumberland was first surveyed in 1789 and provided an overview of buildings in the village.
Smith reviewed the history and buildings of other villages in the former township of Cumberland, including Sarsfield, a typical French Canadian Village with St. Hughes Catholic Church, built in 1880, which is the focal point of the village along with its stone manse.

This would be Richard Ward (1692-1762) who was born to Captain Seth Ward and Anne Hatcher in Henrico County, VA. Richard Ward owned land in Henrico, Brunswick, Cumberland, Prince Edward, and Lunenburg Counties.
He was married firstly to a woman named Frances by whom he had two children: Tahpanes Ward (1729-1784) of Cumberland County, md. Philip Webber (1730-1796; and Benjamin Ward (1717-c1774) who married (1) Missy and (2) Mary Duke, daughter of James Duke and Mary Byrd of James City County & Charles City County.
Richard Ward of this record married 2ndly Mary Johns on 2 May 1759 in Lunenburg County by whom he had one son, Richard Ward, about whom little is know; nor is it known what became of Mary Johns Ward.
