The site is about a 3.75 acre parcel of land along West Cumberland Street approximately 1.0 mile from the center of the village and within view of several residences (Figure 1).
It is bounded on the south by Cumberland Street and private homes (the closest within 100 feet); on the east by a wooded hill; to the north by agricultural land (primarily used for corn and soybean production); and to the west by marshy scrub land.

The Colonial Legislature, at a session held January 30, 1748, passed an Act erecting the east side of Salem County into a new county to be called Cumberland.
It was so named by Governor Jonathan Belcher in honor of his patron, William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, brother of the king and the victor over "Bonnie Prince Charles", (Stuart) the Young Pretender to the throne of England whose hopes were quenched at the bloody Battle of Culloden Moor.
The Act establishing the new county divided it into six townships: Greenwich, Hopewell, Stow Creek, Deerfield, Fairfield, and Maurice River.
