Cumberland County was formed on December 14, 1798, from a portion of Green County and named for the Cumberland River, which flows through the county.
The principal water sources in the county are the Cumberland River and the northern portion of the 27,000-acre Dale Hollow Lake.
The population of Cumberland County was 6,850 in 1970; 7,289 in 1980; and 6,784 in 1990.
