	National Road - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Construction of the turnpike was authorized on March 29, 1806 by Thomas Jefferson, and began in 1811 at Cumberland, Maryland.
		The National Road was the first modern road built since the Roman times.
		An engineer by the name of John Loudon McAdam, designed a new road surfacing material known as Macadam and this was the first road in North America to use the system.

	History Magazine - The National Road
		Road transport was generally limited to packtrains and horses over traditional Native American trails.
		In 1803 an Act of Congress allocated a part of the revenues from the sale of land in Ohio to the building of a proper road from Cumberland in Maryland (on the Potomac) to Wheeling in what is now West Virginia (on the Ohio).
		The moving force behind the road was Senator Henry Clay, whose contribution was commemorated by a monument near Wheeling.
