	Cumdachs and Polaires
		The families associated with the different cumdachs are: the Cathach - O'Donnell/ Magroarty; St. Caillen - O'Rourke; St. Mulling - Kavanagh; Dimma - O'Carroll Eli; Domnach Airgid - Maguire; Stowe Missal - O'Kennedy; the Misach - O'Morison; and the Soiscel Molaise - O'Meehan (Kelly 1994:286).
		This cumdach, as several of the others, has had different books associated with it; traditionally it was known as the Shrine of St. Maelruain's Gospel, but the common name of Stowe Missal has currently won favor (Lucas 1973:128).
		It was not until 1986 that the remains of the earliest and largest of the surviving cumdachs were discovered in the lake known as Lough Kinale, which has given its name to the shrine.

	Book of Durrow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		It contains a large illumination program including six extant carpet pages, a full page miniature of the four evangelist's symbols, four full page miniatures, each containing a single evangelist symbol, and six pages with decorated text.
		The earliest known cumdach was made to house and protect the Book of Durrow at the behest of King of Ireland Flann Sinna (879-916).
		The five pound note of the "Series B" banknotes of the Republic of Ireland contained an excerpt from the book.

	Meehan Surname History
		Muh-lay-she, emphasis on 2nd syllable), is "one of the greatest treasures of Ireland", and preserved in the National Museum of Ireland, quite a famous piece of late Celtic art, actually.
		There are a few legends associated with the Cumdach and various Meehans down the centuries.
		One relates how the shrine was lost, and found by a humble parish priest, who was given a vision in a dream of angels descending and opening the Well of Molaise on the Island, in the wall of which was hidden the box.

	St Colmcille
		The manuscript was first located for certainty in Durrow in the period between 877 and 916 when King Flann Mac Mael Sechnaill was king of Ireland.
		It was placed in a cumdach (shrine), because it was believed to be a relic of St Colum Cille.
		After the monasteries were closed down in the 1540s the precise location of the manuscript was not known for certainty although it seems to have remained in local hands.

		Between 1062 and 1098 a special cumdach or shrine was made for it and the manuscript was named ‘Cathach’ or ‘Battler’ from the practice of carrying it thrice right-hand wise around the field of battle as a talisman.
		It was taken to France in 1691 and brought back to Sir Neal O'Donel, Newport, Co. Mayo, in 1802.
		The manuscript was discovered in 1813 when the cumdach was opened by Sir William Betham.
