In 1826 the United Kingdom, a leviathan steamship, as she was considered at the time of her construction, was built for the London and Edinburgh trade, steamship facilities in the coasting trade being naturally of much greater relative importance in the days before railways.
The Cunard Line was enabled, and indeed, by the terms of its contract, obliged, to run a regular service with a fleet of four steamships identical in size, power and accommodation.
The first Oceanic, pioneer steamship of the line, was launched on the 27th of August 1870, and sailed for New York on the 2nd of March 1871.

She was the flagship of the Cunard Line from 1969 until she was succeeded by RMS Queen Mary 2 in 2004.
The QE2 was considered the last of the great transatlantic ocean liners prior to the RMS Queen Mary 2, and she was the last oil-fired passenger steamship to cross the Atlantic in regularly scheduled liner service before she was refitted with a diesel power plant.
At 70,327 tons and 963 ft (294 m) long, with a top speed of 32.5 knots (60 km/h), she is one of the largest and fastest passenger vessels afloat.

(I 7871865), British civil engineer, founder of the Cunard line of steam-ships, was born at Halifax, Nova Scotia, on the 21St of November 1787.
In conjunction with Messrs Burns of Glasgow and Messrs Maclver of Liverpool, proprietors of rival lines of coasting steamers between Glasgow and Liverpool, he formed a company, and the first voyage of a Cunard steamship was successfully made by the Britannia from Liverpool to Boston, U.S.A., between July 4 and 19, 1840 (see STEAMSHIP LINES).
In acknowledgment of his energetic and successful services Cunard was, in 1859, created a baronet.

The 711 people who did survive the disaster in lifeboats, were picked up by the Cunard Steamship Lines, RMS Carpathia, commanded by Captain Arthur Henry Rostron who was acclaimed for his immediate and decisive action in coming to the aid of the Titanic.
Of the relatively few dead bodies recovered, 150 were brought to the search-and-rescue operations center in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where the majority of them were buried in the Fairview Cemetery.

The line was a creation of James A. Farrell, Sr., the chief of the export subsidiary of U.S. Steel, who ahead of anyone else, realized the key to steel exports lay in providing cheap and reliable ocean transportation.
