CUNiFer Alloy materials for marine constructons - Boat Design Forums
CuNiFer Alloys (copper/nickel) have many advantages as material for building hulls, rudders and any other wetted part of seawater exposed of boat.
CuNiFe = 86/66-10/30-x-x coppernickel (mostly tubing) or Nickle Aluminum Bronze or Manganeze Bronze.
But for the life of me, I can't recall any hulls built with totaly CuNi or CuNiFe plating, it would be almost impossible to weld without major distortion (much like Al but worse).

The WRHP was designed in 1970 by Seth Lover — inventor of the original PAF humbucker for Gibson in the '50s — and was made with Cunife (Copper/Nickel/Ferrite, as opposed to Alnico) polepieces which were magnetized themselves instead of having a one-piece bar magnet underneath like the PAF.
Cunife was chosen mainly because it was both magnetic and soft enough for threading.
The CuNiFe magnets were threaded and slotted to function and resemble the adjustable screw type poles of a Gibson humbucker.

LVDT Technology - Linear Velocity Transducer
ALNICO is made from sintered metal, and is characterized by its high sensitivity, brittleness, plated surface, and threaded brass endcaps.
CUNIFE is machined from bar stock, and is characterized by its lower sensitivity rating than ALNICO, ruggedness, visible draw marks, and threads directly in magnet.
For ALNICO magnets it is 540°C; for CUNIFE magnets it is 840°C. The recommended operating ranges for these magnets are 300°C and 540°C, respectively.

Magnetic Alloys - Hoskins Mfg Co
Hoskins' Cunife is a 60% copper, 29%, nickel and 20% iron ductile permanent magnet alloy developed primarily for applications requiring close tolerance parts with strong directional magnetic properties.
Timer motors for major applications, speedometers, aircraft instruments, electronic equipment and control systems are among the various types of products in which its strength, ductility, and high coercive force can be advantageously employed to obtain low cost per unit of useful magnetic energy.
Moreover, because magnets made of new Hoskins Cunife require no costly finishing operations, they may be produced in a wide variety of small, intricate sizes and shapes that would be either impractical or impossible with other permanent magnet materials.

The company is also tackling ever-large repair jobs, as recent work on a 75 metre section of main cooling line at one o Europe’s largest oil refineries proves.

Copper-nickel wrought alloys (CuNiFe) are highly corrosion resistant - even with high chlorination.
The Viega press-fitting technique reduces time and costs relating to CuNiFe pipe connections and the attendant risks.
The efficient cold press-fitting technique does away with the need for traditional practices such as soldering and welding and renders extensive fire precautions unnecessary.

Understanding and Using Permanent Magnets, Chapter 1
The physical development of magnetic materials beyond magnet steels began in 1921 with the introduction of cobalt chrome steel.
Subsequent work on alloys with nickel, aluminum, copper and platinum led to the introduction of precipitation hardened alnico (aluminum nickel cobalt) in 1935, Cunife (copper nickel iron) in 1935 and Platinum Cobalt in 1936.
The alnico magnets were further improved in 1940 with the introduction of domain oriented alnico V that is still in frequent use today.

Magnetic hardening and phase segregation in CuNiFe and CuNiCo alloys   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Magnetic hardening and phase segregation in CuNiFe and CuNiCo alloys
The temperature dependence of the coercive fields in aged CuNiFe and CuNiCo has been measured between 300 K and 77 K. The results are interpreted in terms of shape anisotropy of the ferromagnetic phase of the alloys and the variation of ferromagnetic particle volume with ageing time is deduced from the results.
An arrest of the volume increase with ageing time is attributed to the start of coherency loss between the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases of the alloy when the diameter of each lamellar interface is about 600 Å.

 Accurate Wide Range Reissues?
My understanding of the situation is not at all that it isn't possible to obtain cunife - there are plenty of companies who will readily make you any sort of custom ingot you wish - you could specify the alloy completely, and cunife is not really high-tech stuff.
The real problem is that it is so cost prohibitive to have custom machine parts made from custom alloys, no boutique company could afford to do it.
I think what needs to be done is some enterprizing individual needs to discover every possible application for cunife screws, find buyers, and get a lot of screws made.

I would assume that Fender would try to keep an AVRI '72 Tele as close to original specs as possible, and that would require once again producing these kind of unusual and possibly extra pricey pickups, too.
I would say moderately priced, but enough to show that it is a USA model with superior build but affordable also.

Economic and technical advantages have also been found in the production of components for magnetic applications.
Small permanent magnets of the Alnico, Cunife or Cunico types can be pressed and sintered to final shape and size, showing equivalent magnetic properties but finer grain structures and better mechanical strengths than similar cast materials.
Soft magnetic sintered products in iron, silicon-iron and iron with about 5% of phosphorus are widely used in the manufacture of pole pieces and armatures for dc application.
