 Cunner
Cunners caught in deep water are often almost as red as the rosefish; on the other hand we have seen very pale ones, more or less speckled all over with flish dots, over sandy bottom.
Cunners are also taken, here and there, along the coast, eastward to the Grand Manan Channel, sometimes in numbers as in 1928, when so many were caught "about the rocks and in the coves to the south of West Quoddy," that they were reported in the press.
And while the cunner is reported from Black River east of St. John, New Brunswick, it seems to be unknown farther in along the New Brunswick shore of the Bay of Fundy or in Chignecto Bay and Minas Basin at the head.

Results suggest that male plasma vitellogenin expression is not a reliable indicator of male reproductive dysfunction in adult cunner exposed to estrogens for 2-8 weeks during their reproductive season, at least in relation to capacity to produce motile sperm or fertilize eggs.
Cunner (Tautogolabrus adspersus) is a temperate reef fish normally found near areas with abundant submerged cover, such as rocks, stone walls, or pilings.
Cunner exhibit a well-characterized courtship behavior that culminates in a sudden rush to the surface of the water with simultaneous release of gametes by male and female fish (19-21).

Captured cunner were transported to the laboratory in coolers filled with ambient seawater and then held in large rectangular (4,400 L) or round (1,000 L) holding tanks that were aerated and received ambient, flow-through bay seawater.
Because cunner eggs are buoyant for a period of hours after spawning, each tank was fitted with a top drain to siphon surface water and spawned eggs.
However, in simultaneously exposed cunner of both sexes, male plasma vitellogenin concentrations exceeding a threshold level (~15 mg/mL plasma) was a reliable indicator of reduced female reproductive function due to estrogen exposure.

 Tautog
The tautog suggests an overgrown cunner, but it is a heavier, stouter fish (about three times as long as deep, not counting the caudal fin) with caudal peduncle so broad and caudal fin so little wider than the peduncle that it is hard to hold a heavy one by the tail.
The dorsal fin (16 to 17 spines and 10 soft rays) originates over the upper corner of the gill openings and runs back the whole length of the trunk; the anal (3 stout spines and 7 or 8 soft rays) corresponds in outline to the soft portion of the dorsal, under which it stands.
Northward from Cape Cod it is unusual to catch one more than 3 or 4 miles from the land, or deeper than, say 30-60 feet; we have never heard of one caught on a long line set for cod or haddock, and they are unknown on the offshore fishing banks.
