The genus Cunninghamia is a genus of one or two species of evergreen coniferous trees in the cypress family Cupressaceae.
The general shape of the tree is conical with tiered, horizontal branches that are often somewhat pendulous toward the tips.
Cunninghamia bears softly spined, leathery, stiff, green to blue-green needle-like leaves that spiral around the stem with an upward arch; they are 2-7 cm long and 3-5 mm broad at the base, and bear two white or greenish-white stomatal bands underneath and sometimes also above.

Cunninghamia became extinct in both North America and Europe by the end of the Miocene.
The present distribution of the genus is limited to regions of mean annual temperature (MAT) of 15° to 19° C and mean annual precipitation (MAP) exceeding 1500 mm.

The occurrence of Cunninghamia chaneyi from the middle Miocene sediments of the former Lake Clarkia in Northern Idaho is the last known occurrence of this genus in the geologic record of North America.
Cunninghamia chaneyi has been reported on the basis of foliar branches from the Oligocene Rujada, Lyons and Bridgecreek floras of Oregon and the Oligocene Gumboot flora of southwestern Washington.
The Clarkia Cunninghamia chaneyi is represented at four localities by well preserved compressions and impressions of foliar branches, rarely single needles, seed cones and pollen cone fascicles.

Dead leaves remain attached to the branches, making the interior of the trees untidy and prickly, but a well grown specimen is among the more attractive conifers.
Although quite handsome and not difficult to grow, CUNNINGHAMIA species are found mostly in botanical gardens and larger private collections.

A GENUS, belonging to the Coniferœ, with only one known living species,2 and doubtfully represented in the fossil state.8 Cunninghamia is considered by Bentham and Hooker, and by Masters, to be a member of the family Araucariese ; but it is placed by Eichler8 in Taxodinese.
It appears, however, to be a connecting link between the Araucarieae and the Taxodinese ; and mainly differs from Araucaria, some species of which it closely resembles, in foliage, in having three ovules on the bract, and not one only, as in that genus.
