Cupressus dupreziana - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cupressus dupreziana, the Saharan Cypress, is a very rare coniferous tree native to the Tassili n'Ajjer mountains in the central Sahara Desert, southeast Algeria, where it forms a unique population of trees hundreds of kilometres from any other trees.
This species is distinct from the allied Cupressus sempervirens (Mediterranean Cypress) in its much bluer foliage with a white resin spot on each leaf, the smaller shoots often being flattened in a single plane.

Cupressus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The genus Cupressus is one of several genera within the family Cupressaceae that have the common name cypress; for the others, see cypress (disambiguation).
As currently treated, these cypresses are native to scattered localities in mainly warm temperate regions in the northern hemisphere, including western North America, Central America, north-west Africa, the Middle East, the Himalaya, southern China and north Vietnam.
Cupressus sempervirens is the type species of the genus, defining the name Cupressus.

The hybrids Cupressus sempervirens (as female) x C. dupreziana (as male) aroused great interest, becuase some morphological traits of hybrids were always identical to those of the paternal tree, C. dupreziana.
dupreziana is native to the Tassili N’Ajjer (figure 1) desert of Algeria and is one of the most threatened trees in the world.
In this variant, viable pollen (male gametophyte) is diploid, embryos do not have the same allozymes as their mothers, and the endosperm (seed nutritive tissue) is not haploid, although in Gymnosperms it is derived solely from the female gametophyte.

The pollen of Cupressus dupreziana lodges in the female sexual organ of Cupressus sempervirens, and generates an embryo there.
This being so, the descendents should have a genetic lineage composed of genes from the male parent (the rare cypress) and the female parent (the more common variety), but the genetic characteristics of the embryos are exactly the same as those of Cupressus dupreziana.
