Curieuse   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Curieuse is designated a Marine National Park, and as such, has no (human) inhabitants, except for, perhaps, park rangers.
It is a 15 minute boat ride from Praslin, and attracts tourists with its introduced population of Aldabra tortoises and extensive mangrove habitat.
The wall seen was actually built across the bay to keep in captive sea turtles for a now-defunct and unsuccessful farming operation years ago.

Curieuse was once well-known for its abundant molluscs, octopi and lobsters, but there numbers have declined and the crab population in the mangrove areas are only now recovering; the land crab Cardiosoma is still abundant on the coastal strip.
Curieuse is also listed as a protected breeding site under the Turtle Protection Act, under which it is illegal to hunt turtles in the sea area 1,000m from the high water mark.

Aride Island :: Past & Present
Harrison had just paid a visit of inspection to Curieuse Island where a new leper colony had been created by the government in 1829 and he was surprised to find a leper, a slave by the name of Confiance, still living on Aride and being cared for by one of Mr.
Harrison states in the same letter that in 1818 they were shipped en masse from Curieuse to Aride, which was probably still without a proprietor to protest against the move.
Between the years 1817 - 1829, when the British government established the new asylum on Curieuse, Aride was possibly therefore an unofficial leper colony; the contented Monsieur Confiance having been left behind when the others were transferred back to Curieuse two years before Harrison’s visit.

He retained unquestioned fealty to the incumbent Pope Urban VIII who, in 1633, had enjoined Galileo's appearance before the Roman Inquisition; forced his public recantation of the correct heliocentric, or Copernican, theory of the solar system; and then placed him under the equivalent of house arrest for the remainder of his life.
Niceron, as a good scientist, revered Galileo, understood the legitimacy of his arguments for a central sun and a revolving earth, and particularly respected Galileo's pioneering telescopic observations of the heavens.
