Donations of large amounts of financial resources have been destined for the creation of artistic competitions that, over the course of the years, have increased the city's cultural heritage with the prize-winning works.
The most long running competition was the Curlandese Competition, established thanks to Pietro Duca di Curlandia, who decided to donate 1000 gold sequins to the city after undertaking a trip to Bologna in 1785, as a sign of gratitude for the welcome he received.
The first work to win a prize was the canvas Egeo riconosce il figlio Teseo (Egeo recognises his son Teseo) by Giovan Battista dell’Era in 1787, and the last was the bas-relief by Rito Valla, Colonizzatori fascisti (Fascist colonizers), in 1936.
