2002 Winter Olympics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Prior to these Olympic Winter Games, a number of IOC members were forced to resign after it was uncovered that they had accepted inappropriately valuable gifts in return for voting for Salt Lake City to hold the Games.
These Olympic games were the first since September 11, 2001, which meant a higher level of security than ever before provided for the Games.
When he spoke during the opening ceremonies, Rogge, presiding over his first olympics as IOC president, told the athletes of the host country: "Your nation is overcoming a horrific tragedy, a tragedy that has affected the whole world.

The winter Olympics were begun in 1924 and were held in the same year as the summer games until the 1994 winter games in Lillehammer, Norway, when the alternating cycles began.
A total of eight sports were included in the winter Olympics in 1998: biathlon (cross-country skiing and rifle marksmanship), bobsled, curling (for the first time), ice hockey (which included women’s hockey for the first time), luge (toboggan), figure skating, speed skating, and skiing (which, for the first time, included snowboarding as a medal sport).
The Olympic games are competitions of individual athletes, not of nations, and the IOC does not keep national scores; however, the media of all nations report national standings according to one of two scoring systems.

Curling at the 1924 Winter Olympics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In February 2006, a few days before the start of the Torino Games, the International Olympic Committee ruled that the curling medals were part of the official olympic program in 1924, and not a demonstration event as many authoritative sources had previously claimed (although the IOC itself had never done so).
This official confirmation was the culmination of an investigative campaign begun by the Glasgow-based newspaper The Herald [1], on behalf of the families of the eight Scots who won the first curling gold medals.
Note: R Cousin, Great Britain and Ireland, is listed in the Official Report as a "Non-Participent" and it is not known if he received a medal, however the Skip William Jackson is also listed in the Official Report as a "Non-Participent" and it is known that he did play and did receive a medal.
