Grey Currawong   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Grey Currawongs are close relations of the common Pied Currawong of the eastern seaboard of Australia and the Black Currawong which is restricted to Tasmania.
While the Pied Currawong is a common resident of habited areas and has become accustomed to urban life, the Grey Currawong remains wary of humans.
The Grey Currawong is the larger of the two, but it is the Pied Currawong’s aggression that has made it the scourge of Australia’s smaller birdlife.

 Workers Online : Review : 1999 - Issue 7 : Currawong Beach Cottages
Currawong is a holiday resort owned by the NSW Labor Council, located on Pittwater in Sydney's northern suburbs, between The Basin and Mackerel Beach and backing onto Ku-rin-gai Chase National Park.
Currawong is secluded, peaceful, un-crowded and stunningly beautiful, but what makes it unique is the fact that it's owned by the Union movement and has been run with a view to providing holidays for workers rather than being developed for profit maximisation.
Currawong offers a holiday in a small and special place with likeminded souls, in which for a whole week you won't have to look for a parking place or argue with the kids about whether they can have another Magnum.

Pied Currawongs and the decline of native birds.
Currawongs seem to be generalist predators and do not appear to target any particular size or age range of avian prey.
Nonetheless, it is not clear that currawongs are primarily responsible for predation on both nests and adult in all small native bird populations, nor are the possible compensatory effects of density-dependent population growth rates in small Australian passerines well-understood.

Currawong was released as a feed grade wheat for south-central New South Wales, with a 10% yield advantage over the highest yielding milling wheat with winter habit, Rosella.
Currawong had a more rapid rate of grainfill, and/or a longer duration of grainfilling than other high-yielding winter wheats, leading to significantly heavier grain.
From a plant breeding perspective, the high yield of Currawong is significant for demonstrating rapid genetic gain for yield in Australian winter wheats.
