Current account - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The current account of the balance of payments is the sum of the balance of trade (exports less imports of goods and services), net factor income (such as interest and dividends) and net transfer payments (such as foreign aid).
Absent changes in official reserves, the current account is the mirror image of the sum of the capital and financial accounts.
The traditional response is that the current account is the main causal factor, with capital and financial accounts simply reflecting financing of a deficit or investment of funds arising as a result of a surplus.

Similarly, the current account in the year 1997 is equal to the difference in the stock of net foreign assets of the country between the end of 1997 and the end of 1996.
A current account surplus results in an increase in the net foreign assets of a country while a current account deficit results in a decrease of these assets or, if the country is already a net debtor, it results in an increase in the net foreign debt of the country.
So a current account deficit and the ensuing accumulation of foreign debt may be good, sustainable and lead to higher long-run growth or may be eventually unsustainable and lead to a currency and debt crisis depending on what drives the current account deficit.

Economist's View: Current Account Adjustments and Economic Growth
The current account measures the difference between domestic income and expenditures, and it is the mirror image of the funding needed to finance this difference.
With the deficit in the current account at historic highs, there is a perceived risk that it could quickly reverse (become less negative) if, for any reason, the United States should lose access to the financing that covers the income-expenditures gap.
If the United States were forced to halve its current account deficit, which stood at 6.6% of GDP in the second quarter of 2006, the results of the study would suggest that the current account adjustment may be associated with a modest reduction in GDP growth—0.5 percentage points over the next three years.

The current account reflects the myriad forces that bring our transactions with foreign economies into balance at our borders, of which exchange rates are only one.
According to the aforementioned Federal Reserve study of current account corrections in developed countries, although the large majority of episodes were characterized by some significant slowing of economic growth, most economies managed the adjustment without crisis.
Although increased flexibility apparently promotes resolution of current account imbalances without significant disruption, it may also allow larger deficits to emerge before markets are required to address them.

Understanding The Current Account In The Balance Of Payments
This would be marked as a debit in the financial account of the balance of payments at that period of time, but when future returns are made, they would be entered as investment income (a credit) in the current account under the income section.
However, depending on the nation's stage of economic growth, cycle, its goals, and of course the implementation of its economic program, the state of the current account is relative to the characteristics of the country in question.
But when analyzing a current account deficit or surplus, it is vital to know what is fueling the extra credit or debit and what is being done to counter the effects (a surplus financed by a donation may not be the most prudent way to run an economy).

One by one, countries with large current account deficits were hit by financial turmoil in their equity, currency and bond markets.
We of course know that current account deficits may be a necessary but not sufficient condition for currency and financial pressure; a whole balance sheet approach to risks and vulnerabiliteis is necessary to assess whether an external imbalance is positive or negative and whether it is sustainable over time.
